Grado de EE. UU. 6 - 7
6th Grade is a critical math year because it introduces beginning algebra concepts of integers, proportions, more complex fractions and introduces solving equalities. This course provides the foundational skills needed to master 6th grade content and provides the framework for success in taking Pre Algebra in 7th grade. Each week will be devoted to 1 concept/skill that will be developed through complex problem solving, discussion, and brain-friendly activities. I don't lecture but instead encourage students to create their own understanding through a series of discussions, critical thinking, and problem-solving tasks. Students should be familiar with the following concepts before taking this class: operations of whole numbers and decimals, fraction operations of addition, subtraction, and multiplication, order of operations, variable use and solving 1 step equations. This course can be used for homeschool use or as a review to strengthen these skills. After each class students will be given an optional homework assignment and written and/or video notes that correlate with the lesson. If students complete and turn in the homework, I will give them individual feedback and keep track of their progress. Students enrolled for an entire semester will receive an individual transcript with their strengths and weaknesses at the end of the semester. Please note while the content does naturally build, each week covers just one topic so students can enroll for the weeks they need. *This course will go at a slower pace, and will work on developing reasoning and critical thinking skills that are essential for upper level mathematics. I am a non traditional teacher, no lectures here!
Instead my classes focus on being:
*Student Centered- they lead the pace
*Critical Thinking -complex tasks are given that may be a bit unusual but will cause students to think deeply
*Problem Solving- word problems to keep concepts in context
*Focus on discovering patterns- patterns is the basis of the study of algebra and higher levels of math thinking
*Students create their understanding versus being told what to think
I am constantly learning how to become a better math teacher! I have a Master's degree in Math Education but I don't believe that means I know everything. In fact I am constantly reading about the brain, and the best ways to teach math. I also am constantly evaluating my classes and content and making changes based on how learners interact with the material.
I have 13 years of experience in Education, and have taught math at all levels including adults.

In my down time, I love hanging with my husband, and two girls. We love to read books, play games and do math together (of course:)
