🌟 Instruction follows the Phono-Graphix method for teaching reading and spelling which was developed with students with Dyslexia in mind but is appropriate for all learners. The Phono-Graphix method is very similar to Orton-Gillingham and is based on the Science of Reading. 🤓 Research shows that repetitive practice with new skills helps us learn information faster and retain it longer. Practice sessions should be spread out over a week or more to be most effective. This class only meets once a week but I supply worksheets, digital games, supplemental videos for extended instruction, and a pre-recorded spelling test. 📝 Students will be assigned a weekly spelling list of 25 words at the beginning of each week. During live classes, we will discuss patterns in the words and spelling rules as they apply. A list of 25 words will be provided, as well as 5 bonus words to meet the needs of a wide range of skill levels. 🚧 Keep in mind that the spelling rules only apply to about 70% of English words. We will discuss the spelling rules as they apply but focus heavily on spelling patterns, the sounds in the words, and study skills to master the words' spelling. 📝 Students will be expected to participate by writing the spelling words as modeled and trying different ways to study the words using colors and shapes. We will also discuss the proper usage of the vocabulary. 📝 One of the weekly assignments is to use their spelling words in sentences. Students may share their creative sentences on the classroom page or in a message to the teacher for feedback. 📝 Students will learn to divide words into "chunks" (similar to syllables) and segment each chunk to identify all the sounds in the words. Learners will use a color and shape coding system as a study tool to focus on sounds spelled with more than one letter. 📝 Homework assignments will be given. A worksheet packet is provided after the class meeting. The weekly spelling list will be sent out on the morning of the live meeting at 6 am Central time. 📝 Students can take a low-pressure spelling test with a pre-recorded video to assess their progress. 🗓 Weekly breakdown for 2024: Week of July 8: Words with -ant and -able endings like, "honorable, comfortable, lovable, and habitant" Week of July 15: Prefixes "un" and "dis", like "uncertain, disconnect, and unequal" ***No class the week of July 22, 2024*** Week of July 29: Words with the sounds /o/ and /ow/ spelled with "ou", "aw", "au", and "ow" (mound, sauce, gown, fraud) Week of August 5: Words with prefixes "re", "pre", and "de" (remind, predate, destroy) Week of August 12: Words ending in -ible, -less, and -ment Week of August 19: Plurals, -s or -es Week of August 26: -ies plurals and Irregular plurals like knives, oxen, halves, varieties, galleries Week of September 2: Prefixes mis-, in-, im-, and il- Week of September 9: Endings with -ness and -ily Week of September 16: Long E with -ie or -ei spelling rule Week of September 23: Homophones Week of September 30: Words with soft G sounds like, "emergency, genuine, knowledge" Week of October 7: Greek roots -graph, -phon, -tele, scope, and photo Week of October 14: Greek roots -ology, -ologist, -astro, hydro-, and -geo Week of October 21: Words with special ending /shun/ spelled with -tion like in cooperation, circulation, and exhaustion Week of October 28: Greek roots -mega, -cycle, -thermo, -ped, -man Week of November 4: Prefixes: uni-, bi-, tri-, quad-, and -penta Week of November 11: Words with -trans, -dict, -duct, and -duc Week of November 18: Words with -poly, -multi, -hexa, -hepta, -octa, -deca Week of November 25: Frequently misspelled words like, stomach, business, necessary, sincerely, usually Week of December 2: Words with -ious endings: -cious, -tious, -ious, and -scious "facetious, audacious, dubious" Week of December 9: Words with -ant and -able endings like, "honorable, comfortable, lovable, and habitant" Week of December 16: Prefixes "un" and "dis", like "uncertain, disconnect, and unequal" ***No class the week of December 23.*** The week of December 30th, our lists repeat. I am a state-certified Elementary Teacher who has become aware of the absence of structured spelling instruction in the schools today. In my private reading tutoring practice, I have watched my students become strong and independent spellers by using my approach. I have taught over a thousand spelling students on Outschool since March 2020 in second through middle school grade levels.
