[3rd of four 9-week sessions]
This course takes a modified, thematic approach to 3rd Grade Science. It offers content that is typically taught during the third 9-weeks in a traditional 3rd grade science class. The students will be introduced to the weather, climate and the problem solving portion of the course. They will learn about climate and extreme weather. The students will be able to design solutions to weather-related hazards could include barriers to prevent flooding and wind resistant roofs.

      Week 1 - Clouds
      Week 2 - Precipitation
      Week 3 - Seasons
      Week 4 - Weather Tools
      Week 5 - Climate
      Week 6 - Extreme Weather
      Week 7 - Tornadoes & Hurricanes
      Week 8 - Ice Storms
      Week 9 - Natural Hazards

The students will learn more about the world around them. Students will learn examples of climate in different regions. They will learn how climate predicts weather conditions and climate variations around the world. The students will learn to represent data using tables and graphs to describe typical weather conditions expected during a particular season. These sections will be taught using pictures, video clips, slides, discussions, lecture, and open-ended questions. The students will learn about weather and climate. They will do a lab and collect real-time data about the weather in their city. The students will learn to critically think and develop possible solutions. The students will learn that a variety of natural hazards result from natural processes. Humans cannot eliminate natural hazards but can take steps to reduce their impacts.This section will be taught using pictures, video clips, slides, discussions, lecture, and open-ended questions. The students do not need to have any prior knowledge. The fourth 9-weeks course will pick up where this course leaves off.
