This is the once-a-week version of our popular 3x/week spelling class. 🌟 Instruction follows the Phono-Graphix method for teaching reading and spelling which was developed with students with Dyslexia in mind, but is appropriate for all learners. The Phono-Graphix method is very similar to Orton-Gillingham and is based on the Science of Reading. 🤓 Research shows that repetitive practice with new skills helps us learn information faster and retain it longer. Practice sessions should be spread out over a week or more to be most effective. This class only meets once a week but I supply worksheets, digital games, supplemental videos for extended instruction, and a pre-recorded spelling test. 📝 Students will be assigned a weekly spelling list of 20 words at the beginning of each week. During the live class, we will discuss patterns in the words and spelling rules as they apply. A list of 20 words will be provided, as well as 5 bonus words to meet the needs of a wide range of skill levels. 🚧 Keep in mind that the spelling rules only apply to about 70% of English words. We will discuss the spelling rules as they apply but focus heavily on spelling patterns, the sounds in the words, and study skills to master the words' spelling. 📝 Students will be expected to participate by writing the spelling words as modeled and trying different ways to study the words using colors and shapes. We will also discuss the proper usage of the vocabulary. 📝 One of the weekly assignments is to use their spelling words in sentences. Students may share their creative sentences on the classroom page or in a message to the teacher for feedback. 📝 Students will learn to divide words into "chunks" (similar to syllables) and segment each chunk to identify all the sounds in the words. Learners will use a color and shape coding system as a study tool to focus on sounds spelled with more than one letter. 📝 Homework assignments will be given. A worksheet packet is provided after the class meeting. The weekly spelling list will be sent out on the morning of the live meeting at 6 am Central time. 📝 Students can take a low-pressure spelling test with a pre-recorded video to assess their progress. 👀 Learners will need to know the sounds of all the letters of the alphabet, as well as letter combinations like: sh, th, ch, and ck. There are 22 different lists in the program. Each week focuses on a different spelling pattern or sound. 🗓 Weekly breakdown for 2024: Week of 5/6/24: Words with Long A spelled with -ay, a_e, -aigh, and -ai like in, "crave, sway, straight, and entertain" Week of 5/13/24: Long A spellings -a, -ea, -eigh, -ei, and -ai like in, "apron, neighbor, vein, steak, aiming" Week of 5/20/24: (no class) Week of 5/27/24: Long E spellings -ea, -ee, -ey like in, "valley, stream, and speech" Week of 6/3/24: Long E spellings -y, -ie like in, "nieces and battery" Week of 6/10/24: Long I spellings -ie, i_e, -y, and -igh like in, "delight, divide, might, pie, rely and deny" Week of 6/17/24: Long O spellings -o, o_e, -oa, -ough, -ow like in, "obey, explode, afloat, although, and throw" Week of 6/24/24: Long U and /oo/ like in, "amuse, June, tissue, and stew" Week of 7/1/24: Silent Letters like in, "salmon, colonel, wrestle, and subtle" Week of 7/8/24: Endings with -tion, -ment, and -able like in, "portable, fiction, and apartment" Week of 7/15/24: Focus on Long Vowels in multi-syllable words Week of 7/22/24: Homophones Week of 7/29/24: Prefixes re-, dis-, and un-, like in "recycle, disappear, and unreal" Week of 8/5/24: Prefixes mis-, over-, pre- like in, "precaution, overgrowth, and misfortune" Week of 8/12/24: Words with endings -ly, -ful, and -less like in "honestly, wonderful, and breathless" Week of 8/19/24: Words ending in -er, -ier, -est, and -iest like in, "friendlier, quietest, hairiest" Week of 8/26/24: -ed and -ing endings like in, "capitalizing, excelling, and dismissed" Week of 9/2/24: Irregular plurals like in, "echoes, thieves, moose, people" Week of 9/9/24: Words with special endings like, "capture, conscious, freesia, and atrocious" Week of 9/16/24: Words with Soft C and Soft G like in, "cymbal, digital, sentence, and engine" Week of 9/23/24: Contractions Week of 9/30/24: Words with -en or -on endings like in, "frighten, lesson, wagon, sharpen" ****Content repeats after the week of 9/30/24 💪 This class is also offered in a self-paced format for students who prefer not to attend live classes. I am a state-certified Elementary Teacher who has become aware of the absence of structured spelling instruction in the schools today. In my private reading tutoring practice, I have watched my students become strong and independent spellers by using my approach. I have taught over a thousand spelling students on Outschool since March 2020 in second through middle school grade levels.
