Class Experience This is a 3rd-grade ELA curriculum taught by a National Board Certified Teacher. We will cover 3rd-grade standards in ELA (phonics, reading, writing, grammar, spelling, fluency). In ELA, we will read fiction/non-fiction books. This class meets for 30 minutes on Tuesdays/Thursdays. In ELA, we will cover a unit/theme each week. Our weekly schedule is as follows, with exceptions during longer writing or reading assignments: Reading: Activate Prior Knowledge, Build Background, Make Predictions, Learn New Vocabulary, Read, Learn New Grammar Rules, and Learn a Phonics Skill or Practice Spelling. Here is an example of the first 4 weeks: Week of August 12th Day 1: Reading: Book: Morty and the Oatmeal Babysitter, by Kathy Hogan. Activate Prior Knowledge, Build Background, Learn New Vocabulary, and Make Predictions. We will read 1/2 of Book Day 2: Read other 1/2 of Book, Grammar: Introduction and Guided Practice on Identifying and Forming Contractions Phonics Work: Introduction and Guided Practice on Compound Words Week of August 19th Day 1: Reading: The students will be introduced to the new story, Awesome Ants, by Rus Buyok. We will learn new vocabulary. We will activate prior knowledge by discussing what we already know about ants. We will create a KWL chart about Ants, including: What do we already know? What do we want to learn? We will read 1/2 of book. Day2: Read other 1/2 of book. Complete KWL chart about what we learned. Write a simple paragraph about what you learned. Week of August 26th Day 1: Reading: The students will be introduced to the new story, Arthur's Bad-News Day, by Lara Henderson Megard. We will learn new vocabulary and make predictions using the story's vocabulary and title. We will activate prior knowledge by discussing what we already know about having a bad day. We will discuss how sometimes a bad thing becomes a good thing. We will read 1/2 of the story. Day2: Finish the other 1/2 of book. Grammar: Introduction and Guided Practice on Exclamatory Sentences. Phonics Work: Introduction and Guided Practice on Open /Y/ that makes a long /e/ sound. Week of September 2nd Day1: Reading: The students will be introduced to the new story, Extreme Animals, by Kathie Lester. We will learn new vocabulary and discuss what it means to be extreme and if they know any animals that are extreme. We will read 1/2 of the book. Day 2: We will read other 1/2 of book. Grammar: Identify comparative and superlatives. Phonics Work: Understand and identify synonyms. New Curriculum will be added as we go. My experience: I am a former 3rd grade teacher and reading specialist. I have a Master’s Degree in Instructional Curriculum & Design with a Specialization in Reading and am a National Board Certified Teacher.

First Grade Reading, Kindergarten Reading, Phonics, Sight Words, Beginning Writing, and Private Tutoring. I also offer private reading assessments and tutoring 1:1. My Professional Background:
I obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education from UNCW in 1996. I am a licensed teacher in the areas of Early Childhood (ages 3-8), Elementary Education (ages 8-12), and a Reading Specialist. I also hold an NBCT (National Board Certified Teacher) license and TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) certificate. I have over 25 years of teaching experience and have been teaching online since 2020.
I currently homeschool two of my three children and work from home.
My Teaching Philosophy:
I believe meeting a student where they are is essential to help them learn successfully. I offer a differentiated style to allow all learners an opportunity to participate. I believe in a multi-sensory approach to learning. I want all children to love reading and learning in general. I am passionate about children gaining confidence in their abilities and feeling successful.
