1st Grade Math PRACTICING TO PRESERVE IT! Class Goal My aim in every class is to create a positive and engaging environment that caters to every student's level. Experience After obtaining my Masters Degree in Elementary Education in 2009, I taught 6th grade for five years followed by 3rd grade for another five years in a public school. During that time, I focused on tailoring my teaching to the individual needs of each student, ensuring that they received the support they needed to succeed. For the past three years, I have been teaching online, working with students of different ages across various platforms including Outschool. Class Setting In my class, I will be using my own custom-made worksheets and Google Slides to teach students. The class will begin with times tables as a warm-up activity, and then we will move on to an interactive lesson to learn or review the topic. We will work on several problems together, and then students will have the choice to work on a problem independently. While students are encouraged to work independently, they will not be forced to take on their own problems. Who Is This Class For? This class is designed for 1st graders, but can also be used for Kindergarteners who want to be challenged or as a review for 2nd graders. ------------Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions regarding the class.------------ Class Schedule Week of Sept 1 (Week 1) Word problems using adding a subtracting of 2 numbers to find the answer Week of Sept 8 (Week 2) Understanding that changing the order of the numbers does not change the sum Commutative Property 8 + 10 =18 10+8=18 If time allows we may touch on Associative property of addition 2 + 6 + 4 = (adding the 6 and 4 will give you 10 then adding the 2 to get the sum) 2 + 10 = 12 Week of Sept 15 (Week 3) Using addition to find the answer in a subtraction problem 9-2=___ 2+____=9 Week of Sept 22 (Week 4) Add and subtract within 20 14+2=16 15-2=13 Week of Sept 29 (Week 5) Add and subtract within 20 Fact Families 8+5=13 5+8=13 13-8=5 13-5=8 Week of Oct 6 (Week 6) Determine if equations involving addition and subtraction are true or false 6 + 1 = 5 + 2 True 7=7 True 7+8=6=1 False Week of Oct 13 (Week 7) Finding the missing number to make the problem true 9+___=12 4 =___ - 9 Week of Oct 20 (Week 8) Finding the missing number up to 120 Week of Oct 27 (Week 9) Breaking apart number 11-19 to determine that each number is made of a 10 and another number Week of Nov 3 (Week 10) Understanding base 10 blocks to understand that the two digits of a two-digit number represent amounts of tens and ones Week of Nov 10 (Week 11) Comparing two numbers using the symbols >, =,and < Week of Nov 17 (Week 12) Adding up to 100 using different strategies Week of Nov 24 (Week 13) Finding 10 more or 10 less than to any given number Week of Dec 1 (Week 14) Subtracting using only multiples of 10 using different strategies Week of Dec 8 (Week 15) Measuring- Comparing lengths of 2 to 3 different objects Measuring different objects and finding the length of an object as a whole number Week of Dec 15 (Week 16) Time-Tell and write time in hours and half-hours using analog and digital clocks Week of Dec 22 (Week 17) Review Week - Adding and Subtracting up to 100 Week of Dec 29 (Week 18) Graphs- Interpreting data from a chart to answer a question Week of Jan 5 (Week 19) Review Game Week of Jan 12 (Week 1) Word problems using adding a subtracting of 2 numbers to find the answer Week of Jan 19 (Week 2) Understanding that changing the order of the numbers does not change the sum Commutative Property 8 + 10 =18 10+8=18 If time allows we may touch on Associative property of addition 2 + 6 + 4 = (adding the 6 and 4 will give you 10 then adding the 2 to get the sum) 2 + 10 = 12 Week of Jan 26 (Week 3) Using addition to find the answer in a subtraction problem 9-2=___ 2+____=9 Week of Feb 2 (Week 4) Add and subtract within 20 14+2=16 15-2=13 Week of Feb 9 (Week 5) Add and subtract within 20 Fact Families 8+5=13 5+8=13 13-8=5 13-5=8 Week of Feb 16 (Week 6) Determine if equations involving addition and subtraction are true or false 6 + 1 = 5 + 2 True 7=7 True 7+8=6=1 False Week of Feb 23 (Week 7) Finding the missing number to make the problem true 9+___=12 4 =___ - 9 Week of March 2 (Week 8) Finding the missing number up to 120 Week of March 9 (Week 9) Breaking apart number 11-19 to determine that each number is made of a 10 and another number Week of March 16 (Week 10) Understanding base 10 blocks to understand that the two digits of a two-digit number represent amounts of tens and ones Week of March 23 (Week 11) Comparing two numbers using the symbols >, =,and < Week of March 30 (Week 12) Adding up to 100 using different strategies Week of April 6 (Week 13) Finding 10 more or 10 less than to any given number Week of April 13 (Week 14) Subtracting using only multiples of 10 using different strategies Week of April 20 (Week 15) Measuring- Comparing lengths of 2 to 3 different objects Measuring different objects and finding the length of an object as a whole number Week of April 27 (Week 16) Time-Tell and write time in hours and half-hours using analog and digital clocks Week of May 5 (Week 17) Review Week - Adding and Subtracting up to 100 Week of May 11 (Week 18) Graphs- Interpreting data from a chart to answer a question Week of May 18 (Week 19) Review Game

Hey there! I'm excited to share that I have a Master's Degree in Elementary Education and spent a wonderful 10 years teaching in a public school. I had the pleasure of teaching 6th grade for 5 years and then taught in a 3rd grade classroom for the last 5 years. In my classes, I used small groups and tailored instruction to meet the diverse needs of my students.
I'm really passionate about encouraging reading for fun and for learning. I truly believe that when students have a solid foundation in reading, learning becomes a whole lot easier. And you know what? Math has now become my new favorite subject to teach! I love coming up with different ways to help struggling learners and to challenge those who are stronger in math. I firmly believe that by making math and reading enjoyable, we can inspire a love for learning that lasts a lifetime.
On top of that, I'm also incredibly fortunate to be able to stay at home with my amazing 5-year-old triplets every day. They are an absolute joy!
