Please note that the time/day and area of focus will be customized to your requests and the needs of your learner. Structured as a private 1:1 session, I provide targeted enrichment and/or support in Reading English Language Arts (Reading-ELA) and Writing for pre-school through high school students. I use a large assortment of materials - many "tried, true, and tested" during my years in the classroom and as a private tutor. Such as worksheets, games, puzzles, dynamic lectures, picture cards, reading strategies, and graphic organizers, to name a few. Before our first session, I ask parents to share with me the challenges and strengths specific to the individual student. This information helps me to best meet the students exact area(s) of need. Also, parents are encouraged to choose a specific area of focus, such as letter recognition, phonics, fluency, reading comprehension, identifying main ideas & supporting details, using reading strategies (author's purpose, summarizing, inferring, predicting, cause & effect), story sequencing, story elements, essay organization, & decoding non/fiction text. If no specific areas of need are identified, I will provide an age and level-appropriate lesson based on academic and developmental best practice and learning standards. If you prefer, parents can share with me assignments and/or materials used within your child's academic setting. This type of session, while individualized and 1:1, also offers targeted homework and classroom curriculum support in already established areas. Neurological studies and professional experiences show that children learn best when they feel comfortable within an encouraging and supportive environment; thus, I prioritize the teacher/student relationship. To help students feel at ease, short talking breaks and friendly activities will be sprinkled throughout our sessions. I have personal and professional experience working with students who are considered below-average learners, average learners, and above-average learners. I have worked with students categorized as gifted, 2E, and neurodiverse. Additionally, I have worked with students who want a "book buddy" - someone with whom to read the same book at the same time. After determining a reading schedule and identifying student needs, we engage in lively discussion, compose text based on writing prompts or enjoy completing creative projects. *Please note that parents are asked to reimburse the cost of books and/or materials required by your student* With all of these options, my top priority is to increase the skill base of the student, while having fun. I hope that each child feels as though s/he is working with a supportive and enthusiastic Reading-ELA coach. Students leave each session with clear goals, exercises, reading tasks and/or identified accomplishments that can easily be communicated with parents upon request. I can accommodate a variety of schedules and I am happy to assist students interested in lessons multiple times per week by using different session links. Home and "school" communication is the key to helping your student; thus, we'll be in touch regularly:-) Cost: $25 for (1) 25 minute 1:1 session. $45 for (1) 45 minute 1:1 session. Proudly, I share with you a couple of reviews from real parents of children with whom I am currently working: "5-STARS! Jessica is thorough and incredibly thoughtful. We feel like we have a protection in place for our son." "5-STARS! It was awesome!" "5-STARS! Thank you. [Your] plan is perfect and we're on board."

**AS OF MAY 1, 2024 I AM TAKING A TEACHING SABBATICAL FOR BOTH GROUP CLASSES AND 1:1**
I am passionate about teaching children to make meaning out of the text by exercising their comprehension and analytical abilities, developing language skills, improving memory, and expanding their understanding of the world when they comprehend the written word. When I get to be a part of the process of children coming to understand the text and its meaning, I feel fulfilled as an educator and know that these are valuable life skills.
I have spent the past 13 years studying executive functioning and organizational abilities in young children, middle schoolers, and high schoolers for professional and for personal reasons. I have been fortunate enough to attend several professional conferences focusing on the connections between neurodevelopment and paying attention, organizing, planning, prioritizing, task initiation, understanding different points of view, regulating emotions, and self-monitoring (keeping track of what you are doing). My knowledge deepened when, in 2020, I began working as a study skills and executive functioning tutor.
My Bachelor of Arts in English Literature and Master of Science in Child Development allow me to design developmentally appropriate lessons optimized for student success. Twenty-four years of combined experience teaching in public school, tutoring, and being a licensed Pediatric Developmental Therapist has given me tools to educate ages 3 through 18. Additionally, working as an online ESL teacher has equipped me with the skills and knowledge necessary to engage students in a virtual classroom, use digital material and master a variety of live online applications.
When not teaching, I'm busy being a mom to my three children. During my free time you'll find me engrossed in one of my favorite hobbies: foster animal care, loom knitting, tap dancing, or planting in my garden. You will always see me with a book:-)
