Join this enlightening class, tailored for students aged 9 to 17, to explore the compelling world of smartphones and video games. With Jo, a seasoned computer programmer who has worked on developing apps and games, students will gain critical insights into the mechanisms of digital addiction and learn how to navigate their digital habits healthily. Course Content: Detailed exploration of digital addiction, including what makes smartphones and video games hard to put down. We’ll discuss the dopamine-driven feedback loops that games and social media create to keep users engaged. Review of extensive peer-reviewed research that outlines the psychological and physical effects of excessive screen time. This includes impacts on sleep patterns, social interactions, and academic performance. Practical, age-appropriate strategies to help students recognize signs of excessive use and effectively manage their digital habits. What You Will Learn: The science behind screen addiction: Understanding how and why digital platforms are designed to be addictive. Tools for recognizing signs of unhealthy technology use in oneself and others. We will cover common indicators of digital addiction such as mood changes, withdrawal from social activities, and neglect of responsibilities. Strategies to regain control: Techniques for setting limits, such as using app trackers, setting screen-free times, and engaging in alternative activities that promote physical and mental well-being. Interactive Elements: Discussions on personal experiences with technology, fostering a supportive environment where students can share and learn from each other. Role-playing scenarios to practice setting boundaries with technology use. Creation of personalized action plans for balanced technology use. No experience is required to take this class. Please note: *If you do not see a time or date listed for a class that interests you, please message me with a few possible dates and times, and I will do my best to offer a session that will work for your schedule. *Please be aware I try to teach all of my classes, to at least 2 students as I feel it provides a better teaching and learning experience. Please note, this class will highlight to students how much of their lives they are wasting on screens and the harmful effects this has on their minds, bodies and relationships. Some students can find the realization that they have a screen addiction problem profoundly distressing.
After this class, please ensure that you speak to your child about what we have covered and be prepared to offer the support they will need to overcome their addiction. You may wish to approach local counselling services to find out what professional support is available to you.
Please be aware that addiction is a problem, whether it is screen time, video games, drugs, alcohol or any other addictive behaviour. If your child identifies that they have a problem during this class please seek professional help immediately.

Johnathan holds a Bachelors' Degree in Computer Science during which course he learned how to programme video games and phone apps and the science behind making the screen time highly addictive, a requirement of the companies who make this industry.
He has worked with children of all ages in the fields of sports, circus skills and business as a trainer and mentor. He has extensive experience of mentoring and counselling which he applies during this class.
Johnathan has been a martial arts expert since the age of 9. From the age of 16 he worked with various circus teams where he learned many skills. He has travelled the world performing for audiences including Formula 1 events, royalty and international superstars. He is a fully insured fire performer with many skills including bubbleology, staff spinning, juggling and stilt walking, to name but a few.
As a serial entrepreneur who founded four successful companies before the age of 35, my drive to succeed in life began in my teens when I realised the power of positive motivation. I was lucky enough to have a good mentor who guided me through the intricacies of financial management which helped me to understand the value of money, how to identify and seize opportunities to make money and how to manage an investment portfolio.
Johnathan also teaches conversational English to children and adults across the world.
