Do you struggle to write the perfect paragraph? When you need to respond to a question by writing a paragraph do you freeze up? Then this is the class for you. In this one time class we will focus on how to write a short response when given a prompt. The class will not focus on spelling or grammar. This class will focus on writing a topic/thesis sentence, 3 detail sentences and a conclusion sentence. The class will begin by analyzing different levels of paragraphs. Through a discussion students will determine what makes the example a strong paragraph and where could it be improved. Next, students will be given a prompt that we will respond to as a group. Using the prompt we will develop a topic/thesis statement that restates the question and contains 3 details. Then we will focus on writing a detail sentence for each detail in the topic sentence. Lastly, we will focus on writing a conclusion sentence that restates our topic/thesis statement. As we work on each part of the paragraph students will assist the teacher in writing to a separate question through group discussion. As the teacher completes each step they will work to complete the same by responding to the group prompt/question. Students will share their writing as we go through a discussion. Students will offer "stars and wishes" to each other as they share their responses. Teacher will assist students in every step by hearing each response and making suggestions of ways to improve. We will end the class with students using a simple rubric to grade their response along with using breakout rooms so they can share their completed paragraph with a partner and receive feedback.Students will use color coding to see how the parts of the paragraph all fit together as a cohesive writing piece. As optional homework students will write a different paragraph on their own and submit it through the classroom for the teacher to analyze and give feedback. Please note this class will focus on the structure of writing a complete paragraph and not on spelling or grammar. Essay or short answer is becoming the way of the future to demonstrate knowledge learned by students. When students leave this class they will have an understanding of paragraph structure when responding to a prompt.
