Students in this fun and interactive Science & Reading class deepen their knowledge about bee communication as they read an informational article, participate in class discussion, and apply what they learn in a bee dance simulation game. Students also practice pre-viewing, a helpful strategy for reading non-fiction. A note about reading level* Reading skills and confidence can vary quite a bit from student to student. Feel free to look at a sample from the reading we'll do in class to judge whether it is a good fit for your learner. If in doubt, feel free to message me to discuss ways we might adjust the level up or down to suit your learner. With a bit of thoughtful planning, this class will work well for a diversity of learners! Sample Text: "Bees communicate flower location using special dances inside the hive. One bee dances while others watch to learn directions to a specific patch of flowers. The dancing bee smells like the flower patch and also gives the watching bee a taste of the nectar she gathered. Smell and taste helps other bees find the correct flower patch." (excerpt from 'Way of the Waggle Dance' on the Arizona State University Ask a Biologist Website) This class is good for kids who: -are interested in natural Science, animals, and the environment -will benefit from extra non-fiction reading practice in a fun, motivating environment -enjoy interesting class discussion -are motivated by fun, interactive games
