This class is a welcoming and comfortable space to check in with each other and practice mindfulness. We will practice pebble meditation each class with a slightly different focus each day. This is a meditation for kids created by peace activist, poet, and Buddhist monk, Thich Nhat Hanh. It is a lovely, non-sectarian practice to introduce young learners to a mindfulness practice they can use anywhere and anytime. Students are asked to bring 4 pebbles to class that remind them of a mountain, a flower, calm water and space (respectively). We will use the pebbles during our meditation each class. Class format: -welcome learners and brief check in with each student -review pebble meditation instructions -teaching with a focus on one aspect of pebble meditation (see schedule below) -practice pebble meditation (a few minutes to maximum 5 minutes of guided sitting meditation) -mindful movement (including creative explorations and/or yoga poses) -sharing time (students get to share their experiences and ask questions) -September Schedule- Week of September 7: feeling solid Week of September 14 feeling fresh Week of September 21: feeling calm Week of September 28: feeling free -October Schedule- Week of October 3: yoga pose - mountain Week of October 10: yoga pose - tree Week of October 17: yoga pose - cat/cow Week of October 24: yoga pose - star pose Week of October 31: yoga story (all 4 pebble meditation images together) November Schedule: Week of November 7: mindful breathing Week of November 14: qualities of a mountain Week of November 21: qualities of a flower Week of November 28: qualities of calm water December Schedule: Week of December 5: qualities of space Week of December 12: feeling solid Week of December 19: feeling fresh January Schedule: Week of January 9: feeling calm Week of January 16: feeling free continuing class themes to be announced in the new year... Inspiration for this class comes, in part, from the book, "A Handful of Quiet: Happiness in Four Pebbles", by Thich Nhat Hanh, published by Plum Blossom Press. You don't need it for class, but it is a nice, supplementary resource.
