Class Experience

The Moon. You've seen it in the night sky. NASA landed on it for the first time 50 years ago. But what would it be like to live there?

In this class, students will learn about the terrain of the moon, discuss what supplies and other essentials would be needed to live on the moon, design structures for lunar living, and present their final projects to their classmates in the form of sketches, a physical model, a computer-generated drawing, or a written description.

The class will be a mixture of lecture, instructor-led discussion, and student presentation of their own original work.

Week 1- A Look At The Moon- we will discuss the gravity, atmosphere, temperature, and terrain of the Moon, as well as the challenges that each of those elements would present.

Week 2- Necessities for Life- we will discuss what is needed to live, what would make living more tolerable, and how those things could be managed on the Moon.

Week 3- Housing and Structures- we will discuss housing options, construction styles, building materials, and other considerations

Week 4- Why Would We Do This and Presentation of Projects- after a discussion of what could lead us to want to live on the moon, students will present their original work on their colonies. They will be able to ask each other questions, and the instructor will also facilitate discussion amongst students on different issues that each colony may face.

No background knowledge is required for this course.

Students should be willing to spend some time each week working on details of their colony in preparation for the final week of class.

Please note: I usually run classes that don't meet the enrollment minimums, but this class really does work best with at least 3 students. There is a lot of discussing and sharing of ideas built in that students will not benefit from if they are the only learner present.
