In this 6 unit self-paced course, students will be introduced to the 6 main animal groups ( mammals, birds, fish, reptiles, amphibians, insects.) Students will learn about the characteristics of each type of animal and will be presented with many examples of different animals in each group. They will complete a craft based on the animals learned about in each category. Week 1Lesson 1MammalsThis lesson will focus on mammals. Students will learn the different characteristics of mammals, as well as many fun facts. They will create animal hand print art.Week 2Lesson 2BirdsThis lesson will focus on birds. Students will learn the different characteristics of birds as well as the main types of birds. Students will complete bird directed drawing exercises.Week 3Lesson 3FishThis lesson will focus on fish. Students will learn the different characteristics of fish. They will also explore some different types of fish. Students will create a fish craft.Week 4Lesson 4ReptilesThis lesson will focus on reptiles. Students will learn the different characteristics of reptiles and explore different categories of reptiles. Students will create paper chain snakes.Week 5Lesson 5AmphibiansThis lesson will focus on amphibians. Students will learn the different characteristics of amphibians and examine amphibian life cycles. Students will also explore different categories of amphibians. Finally, students will complete a frog craft.Week 6Lesson 6InsectsThis lesson will focus on insects. Students will learn the different characteristics of insects and explore the different body parts of an insect. Students will explore metamorphosis and learn some fun facts. Finally, they will create paper insect jars.
Students will learn about the 6 main animal categories. They will be able to sort animals into these categories.
I am a certified early childhood and elementary school teacher. I was a science teacher for 5 years and have taught many extracurricular science classes on this topic.
Homework Offered
Students will watch a 15-25 minute video each unit. They will complete a craft (the crafts usually take around 10 minutes to complete.) They will complete the quiz (It should take around 5 minutes.)0 - 1 hours per week outside of class
