US Grade 2 - 5
April 23rd & June 27th start dates work from the beginning of the fun-schooling Journal. Each week students complete a minimum of one animal study from our funschooling journal for a total of 29 animals/29 weeks. Students can read along with me if they are comfortable, receive assistance with spelling, and copy work from my white board, as needed. Concepts are presented with visuals (animal models, x-rays, math representations, finding habitats on my globe, etc.) wherever possible. After they learn about the animal of the week, we go on to do other activities which include: designing an animal habitat, creating a comic, finishing a creative writing prompt, or calculating animal feedings. This class is not a slideshow lecture format. As always, my classes are very conversational and relaxed. I easily adapt to meet students where they are at, and keep things fun with little games and silly questions throughout the class. Our maximum class size is five to ensure all students receive a high level of attention and assistance. There will be no graded assignments. Homeschoolers, unschoolers, and afterschoolers are all welcome! Class is easily adaptable to meet a variety of student needs and abilities. Students can write and draw as much or as little as they are comfortable with. Every student will have the opportunity to share what they know and ask questions. In this fun-schooling class, families will need to purchase their own copy of the following: The Thinking Tree Animal Lover's Fun-Schooling Journal Homeschool Curriculum Handbook Journal for Students Majoring in Zoology. The journal contains many other activities that children may work on throughout the week if they'd like (art prompts, video summaries, nature studies, and more).
Learning Goals
Students will gain valuable research and observation skills, improve creative writing, and become more comfortable with math word problems.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Virginia Teaching Certificate in Science
My teaching experience in the life sciences includes ecology, and biology. Before I became a teacher I worked with wildlife, in a microbiology lab, and also in animal welfare. I have always been called to work with children and have volunteered at girl scout camps, zoo camps and children's hospitals. As a teacher on Outschool I am committed to bringing visual and tangible content to the classroom. I believe teaching is more than just a lecture. My students learn best by seeing examples of concepts, and by breaking new content down into manageable pieces. I am always available for questions and support!
