There's been a zombie outbreak in your city! You are an epidemiologist on the research team whose job it is to study and understand this dangerous infection. Your team has gathered some data from a group of people known to be infected and you must use your knowledge of statistics to figure out where the infection originated and how to predict if a person will recover or turn into a zombie. At the beginning of the class we will do a quick review/lesson on all the necessary statistics skills needed. Then learners will be taken through a guided project where they will draw various graphs and make calculations from a set of data. We will then discuss as a group what types of conclusions can be made from the data. In the end, learners will write an article summarizing what they've learned about the zombie outbreak. We will use Nearpod during this class. Learners will need to copy/paste a link from zoom and toggle back and forth between zoom and their internet browser. Please make sure nearpod.com is allowed by your computer's security settings. The class can also be done without Nearpod if necessary. Just make sure to have some graph paper handy!
Learning Goals
At the end of this project, learners will have strengthened their skills in:
-Creating bar graphs, frequency tables and dot plots
-Finding the mean, median and mode of a set of data
-Describing the distribution of a set of data
-Determining the best choice for the measure of center for a set of data
-Calculating percents

Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Teacher expertise and credentials
I'm Teacher Sarah! I teach math and finance classes and recently have added book clubs to my class offerings. I recently graduated from the University of California, San Diego with a B.S. in Applied Mathematics. I also hold a TESOL teaching certificate. During my time in university, I had many teaching experiences. I've worked as a private math tutor for students ranging from age 8 up to 20 since 2015. Last spring, I completed a student teaching practicum teaching math and physics in a high school classroom. For three years I was a part of the Expanding Your Horizons events where we tried to inspire middle school-aged girls to pursue a career in stem by hosting events where we guided the students through a day of exciting hands-on science projects. Finally, since 2016 I have worked on a variety of online platforms teaching English as a second language to students young and old from all over the world! I believe in making math fun and engaging by exploring its relationship with other subjects that the student is interested in. That is why my math courses usually have a secondary focus such as money, data science, sports, or architecture. This allows the student to almost forget they are in a math class!
