In this 8 week class, the learners will meet to discuss the book, Zoey and Sassafras: Dragons and Marshmallows written by Asia Citro and illustrated by Marion Lindsay. This class includes science and art activities.

 Week 1
Lesson 1
Welcome
In the first lesson, we will begin by doing some getting to know each other activities as well as making predictions about what we think the book is about. We will also go over class procedures. This lesson may be a little shorter than all of the remaining classes depending on class size. Homework will be assigned.
 Week 2
Lesson 2
Discussion of Reading and Activity
In this lesson, we will discuss chapters 1-3 and complete an activity based on the story. The learners will be given a reading assignment as well as a choice of activities to complete for homework.
 Week 3
Lesson 3
Sharing Homework, Discussion of Reading, and Activity
In this lesson, we will begin by having the learners share their homework activities. Then, we will discuss chapters 4-6. The learners will complete an activity based on the story. They will be given a reading assignment as well as a choice of activities to complete for homework.
 Week 4
Lesson 4
Sharing Homework, Discussion of Reading, and Activity
In this lesson, we will begin by having the learners share their homework activities. Then, we will discuss chapters 7-9. The learners will complete an activity based on the story. They will be given a reading assignment as well as a choice of activities to complete for homework.

In this lesson, we will begin by having the learners share their homework activities. Then, we will discuss chapters 10-12 . The learners will complete an activity based on the story. They will be given a reading assignment as well as a choice of activities to complete for homework.
 Week 6
Lesson 6
Sharing Homework, Discussion of Reading, and Activity
In this lesson, we will begin by having the learners share their homework activities. Then, we will discuss chapters 13-14. The learners will complete an activity based on the story. They will be given a reading assignment as well as a choice of activities to complete for homework.
 Week 7
Lesson 7
Sharing Homework, Discussion of Reading, and Activity
In this lesson, we will begin by having the learners share their homework activities. Then, we will discuss chapters 15-16. The learners will complete an activity based on the story. They will be given a reading assignment as well as a choice of activities to complete for homework.
 Week 8
Lesson 8
Wrapping Things Up and Escape Room
The learners will begin the lesson by sharing their homework activity. Then, we will discuss favorite parts of the story as well as what they would change about the story. They will then work together to complete an Escape Room Activity based on the story.
The learners will learn the difference between herbivores, conovores, and omnivores. They will also work on describing characters as well as differentiating between fictional and non-fictional aspects of the story.
I have been an educator for over 30 years. During this time, I have been a teacher for children in grades K-12 as well as a School Library Media Specialist. I have taught all academic subjects including reading and science. I have hosted countless book clubs during this time.  
Homework Offered
The learners will be needing to read parts of the story between each class. I will also be giving homework to help the learners as they read.
0 - 1 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
Assessments will be informal in nature. I will be assessing the learners for their comprehension of the portions of the story we are currently reading as well as with the vocabulary throughout each lesson.
Grades Offered
This class is designed to support unique learning needs by providing accommodations such as audio book reading, hands on activities, and learner selection of activities to go along with the story.

While this book series is fictional, it does include some nonfictional elements. For example, this book includes the terms herbivore, carnivore, and omnivore. We will be discussing science themes while reading this series/book. This book is about a fictional girl who helps a dragon who is sick and her desire and attempts to help the dragon.
