In this class students will read the book Zoey and Sassafras: Dragons and Marshmallows by Asia Citro. Prior to the first class students must read chapters 1-5. Each week we will be doing a craft. To make it as accessible as possible I have put alternate materials that can be used in the materials section of the course. The book follows Zoey and her cat Sassafras as they use the scientific method to help magical animals that come to their backyard. Each week will follow a similar format. Week 1: Students will discuss chapters 1-5. Craft: Mini Magic Doorbell Writing: Create your own magical creature and write about it. Science: All About Insects Week 2: Students will discuss chapters 6-10. Craft: Pipe cleaner Dragon Writing: Entry in Zoey’s Science Journal Science: All About Reptiles Week 3: Students will discuss chapters 11-16. Craft: Create a Magical Creature Model Writing: My Favorite Part and My Favorite Character Science: All About Carnivores, Omnivores and Herbivores
Learning Goals
Students will learn about the scientific method.
Students will learn about insects, reptiles, warm and cold blooded animals and about carnivores, omnivores and herbivores.
Students will practice writing sentences.

Parental Guidance
In the story Zoey finds a sick baby dragon. This could cause some students to be upset. Throughout the story Zoey is trying to make him feel better and she succeeds.
Supply List
Zoey and Sassafras: Dragons and Marshmallows can be purchased from Amazon. A handout will be provided each week for the writing and science activities. Materials required for the crafts are: Week 1: Popsicle sticks, cardboard or sticks from the outdoors White glue small bead, paper cut into a circle or a plastic bottle lid Items to decorate (paper, markers) Week 2: 4 pipecleaners 1 piece of cardboard cut into a rectangle approximately 5cm x 2cm (1inch x 2 inches) 1 piece of construction paper 2 googly eyes or paper cut into circles for eyes Week 3: Salt dough or play dough Recipe for salt dough: 1 cup salt 2 cups flour 1 cup water
