Class Experience

In this multi-day course students will begin their study of Life Science. This is a piece of my semester long science course. In this class we will meet 5 times over a 5 week period for 45 minutes. Topics cover the next generation science standards. Topics will be taught through teacher demo, lecture, discussions, slide shows, videos, interactive notebooks, and graphic organizers. All organizers will be explained in the classroom before each class session. Every class will end with a formative assessment for the students to show their knowledge gained during the session. The formative assessment will be sent through Google Forms with self- grading for immediate feedback to all students. If lesson consists of a demonstration all students will be given the directions and materials needed so that they can complete outside of class. Students will receive optional homework between classes that will consist of, but not limited to a WebQuest to continue their learning or conducting research to add to their interactive notebooks of the covered topic. Please note this class is designed to reach a variety of grade levels therefore the depth of discussion will be based on the students’ knowledge level.
Session Topics:
Session 1- Cells- As students follow along with teacher slide show they will complete a diagram of the parts in an animal and plant cell in their interactive journal. Students will create a Jello Cell model containing cell parts. We will write a compare and contrast paragraph describing the differences between the two cells. Homework will be to complete compare and contrast paragraph.
Session 2- Photosynthesis- Through videos, slide show and drawing students will learn the process of photosynthesis. They will complete a graphic in their interactive notebook as the teacher is describing the process. Students will write a story as a plant going through photosynthesis.
Session 3-Ecosystem- We will use images and discussion to determine the different ecosystems and what may be found in each system. This session will also discuss dangers to an ecosystem. Students will complete a graphic organizer.
Session 4- Food Chains- Teacher will use slide show, videos, and discussion to demonstrate a food chain. Students will complete and example of a food chain in their interactive journal.
Session 5- Food Webs- Through an interactive activity students will help the teacher create a food web for animals in an ecosystem. Students will be given a life science assessment as homework through Google Forms this will allow for immediate feedback of students learning. Students that can not open the Google Form link for the assessment will be sent a word document where they will need to complete and return for grading through the Outschool classroom.

Learning Goals

Students will have a better understanding of life science topics such as photosynthesis, cells, ecosystems, food chains and food webs.

Parental Guidance
Students will use scissors as they are creating flip books for their interactive notebooks. Students will be shown on the video how to use the scissors appropriately for the activity. Teacher will use Mr. Parr videos on Youtube, which will provide songs to reach students that have a musical multiple intelligence learning style. Students will be given a link to complete assessments using Google Forms. They will also be given a word document to download if they can not access the link. Food Allergy precaution as we will be using candy and Jello to create cell models.

Now offering private tutoring in all subjects through 1 on 1 30 minute ongoing sessions. Also available for one time homework help just send me a message to get it set up. 23 Years! I have been teaching 3-5th grade for 21 years and 8th grade science for the last three years. I am passionate about connecting the real world to what students are learning in the classroom with their interests and hobbies. I teach classes that reinforce skills in math through games and discussions, book clubs for those lovers of books, hands on inquiry lessons in science and real world experiences. Math games focus on fractions, multiplication and division. Book clubs will involve outside reading, in depth discussions during our class time, and hands on projects to make connections. Real world experience classes focusing on creating a budget for a vacation, and creating schedules to allow for time management. I am the teacher that relates your learning to your life. My three top interests outside of school are Disney, long distance running and Harry Potter. I have been long distance running for 15 years and of course bringing my two interests together I run at Disney! I can't wait to get to know your student.
