Class Experience

US Grade 9 - 12
Beginner Level
Earth Day was founded in 1970 as a day of education about environmental issues, and Earth Day occurs every April 22. The holiday is now a global celebration that’s sometimes extended into Earth Week, a full seven days of events focused on green living. The brainchild of Senator Gaylord Nelson and inspired by the protests of the 1960s, Earth Day began as a “national teach-in on the environment” and was held on April 22 to maximize the number of students that could be reached on university campuses. By raising public awareness of pollution, Nelson hoped to bring environmental causes into the national spotlight.

We will begin by students sharing what their family does for the holiday so that we can learn a little about each other. We then watch a short video about the holiday giving a nice introduction. After the video I give a lecture all about the holiday including its ancient past, how it came to be, and its present. I'll then ask some questions related to the lecture and students will give their responses. Students may want to scribble down some notes during my lecture. After the lecture we will watch another video about how other countries celebrate the holiday and have a class discussion about it. Then everyone will have an opportunity to play a live online game called "Kahoot" to reinforce what we have learned.
