Class Experience

Have you ever wondered why we decorate trees or string up lights? Have you ever wanted to know where a lot of our popular Yuletide traditions came from? In this class, we will explore the history behind the modern-day popular culture phenomenon that is the Christmas holiday season. We will learn the history behind some of the decorations and traditions, as well as learn a little bit about some of the special folklore of this day - you'll find out what a Gonk is and why they are such a popular holiday decoration.

In this class will learn about and explore:

 - How the modern Christmas holiday of popular culture came to be
(it started in the 1800's with a very famous book)
 - The difference between Christmas and Yule
 - What a Yule log is and why it's so special
 - How and why the holiday became a "season" and not just a single day
 - Why we decorate trees and cover our homes with lights
 - How this time of year got associated with singing
 - Why it's so popular to exchange gifts during the holidays
 - How cookies and candy became such an important part of the season
 - Why bells are such a big part of the season
 - What a Tomten or Gonk is and the story behind it
 - How elves and other little winter spirits became such a big part of the holiday season

Please note this class is completely secular and is designed for all who are curious to explore the history behind many of the traditions that are a part of popular culture today (and why people do them).

Teacher expertise and credentials
I love teaching children of all ages and find great joy in sharing my passions with them. My passions include history, nature, literature, philosophy, art, and science. Nothing brings me greater happiness than when a child learns something new about a topic or finds joy in a subject they never gave much consideration to in the past.

I love helping young children find their passions and discover the world around them. I have experience in working with children with special needs and learning challenges, which has allowed me to create learning opportunities that are engaging and supportive of all learners.
