Class Experience

In this particular class, students, through photographic images, will learn about the life and working conditions of children during the American Industrial Revolution. We will also discuss the whistle blowing practice called "Muckraking" and how it was integral in exposing the practice of child labor. Students will observe an image and answer a series of questions. We, as a class, will compare the answers to see if there are different or similar perspectives. Once we go over the various students's answers, I will go over the actual story behind the image. Students will see how close their answers were to the real story. Students will also tap into or develop their skills of "context". Students will try to identify the circumstances (from the photographs) of the child laborers: what job are they performing? What conditions do you, as a student, observe in the photograph?

Learning Goals

Students will improve their visual interpretive sense, as well as, improve their understanding of the skill of "context." Through visualization, the goal is to spark their curiosity in the subject of child labor, and, at the same time, improve their visual skills for reading.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello:). My name is Jeremy Schmitzerle(Mr.S). I am a Detroit native. I also lived in Denver for eight years; that is where I received my undergrad in History and Secondary Education. I moved back to the Detroit area about five years ago. I wanted to bring my skills and experience to the Detroit area schools. Since i've been back in Detroit, I have taught in three different charter schools-from Middle to High school. I've taught Social Studies, Economics and General Education. I have also received my M.A. in History. I am a Michigan certified teacher with a Social Studies endorsement. My approach to education is one of a facilitator. I want my students to be their own instrument of knowledge and discovery. I want my students to develop the skills of historiography and credible evidence gathering. I feel that those skills are severly lacking in our society as a whole. I want students to be able to compare and identify differences in the different perspectives of the same subject. Learn knowledge, not just information
