Students will learn the steps to make bagels, including options for Vegan and Gluten Free. Learners will have creativity in choosing their topics for a sweet or savory bagel, and in how they create the size of the bagel and shape of the hole. Learners are encouraged to share their baking process with each other visually and receive teacher feedback along the way. Baking teaches math skills through measuring and counting. Baking teaches chemistry through learning about how matter is changed through the processes of mixing and adding heat. Baking also teaches following directions (both verbal and written), motor skills, and kitchen skills.

Ingredients 3 1/2-4 cups bread flour or all purpose flour or 1:1 gluten free flour 1 packet yeast (can be instant or active) 2 tsp salt 1 1/2 T sugar (add extra 1T for gluten free version) 1 1/4-1/2 c warm water Olive oil or melted butter 1.5 T Olive oil or melted butter for gluten free version only Favorite toppings!
Children will need assistance boiling water, getting the bagels in and out of the boiling water, and using the oven to bake the bagels. If your child is allergic to wheat you may use gluten free flour. Eggs, soy, and nuts are not used in this recipe.
