You're Hired: Journalism Camp

In this 5-day camp, students will write newspaper articles for a class newspaper. At the end of the camp, students will have a digital copy of their newspaper.

Class Experience

US Grade 6 - 8
Students will learn how to write a news article and practice working in a virtual newsroom. Each day, we will discuss different aspects of journalism and then put that into practice by writing articles for a classroom printable newspaper. At the end of the week, students will have a digit copy of a newspaper to print for themselves.

Day 1:
- Introduce the format of the class
- Qualities and elements of a news story
- Class activity: Students will look at different news articles and determine what makes them newsworthy.
- For homework, students will find news articles and identify what makes them newsworthy.

Day 2:
- Dissection of a news article
- Look at the parts of a news story
- How to write a news lead
- Discuss AP style
- Class activity: Practice writing news and news leads
HOMEWORK: Practice writing articles and news leads

Day 3:
- How to find a news story
- Discuss different "beats" at a newspaper
- Class activity: Practice writing news articles 
HOMEWORK: Write an article and submit it to the teacher.

Day 4:
- Edit news articles 
- Math in journalism
Design the newspaper: We will work on coming up with the name of our newspaper and work on designing and putting together our newspaper.  The file will be uploaded to the classroom for students to print.

Day 5:
Work on newspaper articles

No prior experience is necessary, but students need to have the desire to write newspaper articles. This class is not for practicing essay writing skills. Writing news articles is different than writing anything else.

Parental Guidance
Students will need to be able to research using the internet and have access to online or physical newspaper articles.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
