Description
Class Experience
This class is a book recommendation course! Each week, teens will come together to share their favorite reads and to get recommendations from other readers. This class will be a casual discussion to help everyone find their next favorite book. By high school, reading can feel like a required task instead of the exciting experience it once was. The purpose of this course is to rediscover the love of reading by learning about new books and figuring out our reading tastes. Reading is much more...
-Ways for learners to find "read-alikes" to books they've enjoyed in the past -What elements they enjoy in books, to help them find similar titles -Encourage a lifelong love of reading -How to make a good recommendation to someone else
I have worked with teens in a public library setting. My expertise was in providing high-quality book recommendations to customers. I also visited middle and high school classrooms and shared books of interest to the students. I am highly knowledgeable about middle grade and young adult literature. I keep up with new releases in these age categories and will be able to share exciting books with students.
-Bring a list of 1-5 book titles they've recently enjoyed
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
1 hour per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
Each week, students are free to guide the discussion in any direction they choose based on the books and genres they're interested in. However, we will also have a focus for each session that will serve as a starting point for student discussion. We may spend the entire session talking about them or we may only touch on them briefly if the students have other books they'd like to talk about. Here are some upcoming topics: Friday, Nov. 13: How to find books like the ones you've loved Friday, Nov. 20: Teen books that have been adapted into movies or TV shows Friday, Nov. 27: Unique young adult retellings (using old stories and making them new) Friday, Dec. 4: Winter-y YA books Friday Dec. 11: A guide to the best young adult fantasy series Friday, December 18: Best YA Books of 2020 Students will be sharing books written for teens as well as adult literature. Most of the books discussed will not include mature content. If necessary, the teacher will provide content warnings for books that include elements such as violence or sexual content.
