Your Brain on Paper: Relaxing & Intuitive Drawing for Teens
What's included
1 live meeting
1 in-class hoursClass Experience
Students will be taught to use drawing to promote mindfulness and enter a calm and tranquil state. We'll cover what it means to trust your creative intuition and tap into our creative unconscious. Focus will be placed on process over product, encouraging freedom and exploration while working. At the beginning of class we'll talk about what it means to work 'intuitively' , drawing from some of the concepts in Dean Nimmer's book, Art From Intuition. I will share with students how I implement intuitive drawing as part of my own personal art practice and we'll view and discuss a few teacher prototypes. Next, a quick demonstration will be given where students can ask any clarifying questions. The majority of class will be spent on studio time, where students work independently. I'll be available at that time for questions and help. We'll do a quick wrap up at the end, at which point students can share their experiences and work if they wish! My teaching philosophy is grounded in exploration. I guide students by showing them examples and possibilities, get them excited through discussion, and set them free to create. I always honor and respect young artists' ideas and creativity. We will never all create the exact same thing, instead, all work completed in my classes will be unique to each student and personally meaningful to them. There is no required background or experience in art or drawing for this class. All levels are welcome and encouraged to attend!
Learning Goals
Students will learn how to use the creative process to calm their mind and understand that drawing can be used as a powerful form of mindfulness or meditation. Students will leave with the knowledge of how to tap into their intuition so they can apply this skill for future drawings.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi!
I teach Art Classes grounded in exploration, intuition, and mindfulness. I taught K-8 art in public schools for 10 years and have regularly observed the pride, affirmation, and pure joy children take away from a truly creative experience.
I have a Master of Arts in Teaching in Art Education from The Maryland Institute College of Art's nationally recognized Graduate Art Education Program and a Cleared California Teaching Credential. I was named a Maryland Teacher of Promise by the Maryland Dep. of Education and was recently chosen to be a workshop presenter at the California Art Education Association's State Conference.
I believe wholeheartedly that the process of making is more important than the finished product and that art is a holistic experience with infinite healing and therapeutic benefits. I volunteered with an Art Therapist to develop an art program for children in transitional housing in Washington, D.C. and I am currently taking expressive therapies classes to learn more about the arts as a healing tool. I believe art teaches life skills like patience, perseverance, problem solving, and flexibility and has the power to promote self-confidence.
I'm a practicing jewelry artist. I love creating art that people can wear as part of their own self-expression!
