1-2 hours per week. Students will be assigned an independent research project on diseases of the brain. They will also complete assessments on neuroplasticity and growth!Assessment
Learner progress is evaluated through the participation in classroom discussions in the forum and completion of assignments.Class Experience
This is a class that will run for 5 weeks. Live meetings are available upon request. Have you ever wondered what is going on inside your brain? How it is the boss of the body? How it thinks and makes things happen? In this introductory class, we will learn about the brain and the nervous system and how they work together. Through the use of videos, discussions and readings, we will look at how the brain works and how it helps us learn. We will find out if we are right brained or left brained and develop an understanding of our own thinking patterns and discover our own unique learning styles and abilities. We will play strategy games to train our brain and we will construct a model brain using household objects. This is an introductory class and a working knowledge of the human body is helpful. There will be one discussion and one homework assignment per week. Students will post to the discussion board weekly and respond to one other post! A weekly email will be sent to all students with extension or exploratory activities or experiments. Students are to record the completion of the activities and share with the class in the forum! Learner progress is evaluated through discussion posts and completion of the assignments.
Learning Goals
The learner will understand basic brain functioning and how thinking works!

I have been a teacher since 2008 and have always enjoyed teaching about the human body, especially the brain and how it works. I am offering this class as an asynchronous class opportunity/flex class so as give students the opportunity to self-study in a more flexible manner. In my classes, I use a reading and comprehension focused method with hands-on practical applications to support learning. In my classes, learning is engaging, fun and individualized. I had offered a body class through Outschool and while we discussed the brain, there wasn't enough time to delve into the wonders of it in detail. This standalone class will allow for that opportunity. I recently received my certificate in Social Emotional Learning and Wellness and am excited to offer these classes based on these principals.
