Designed specifically for young learners that are interested in beginning to write poetry, this class focuses on limericks! We will meet once a week, 30 minutes at a time, for two weeks. This class is suitable for gifted learners! FIRST CLASS: Foundations & the Rhyming Tree Throughout our first class, we will read and discuss several limericks. We’ll take a close look at limerick rhyming schemes and rhythm patterns. We will learn about the traditional form and rhythm pattern, as well as...
In this class, students will: · Be able to define, and identify the form and structure of, limericks · Develop vocabulary and ideas for writing limericks · Be able to compose a limerick · Practice art as a form of self-expression · Build reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills · Practice creative and critical thinking
I absolutely love poetry! I wrote and studied poetry seriously from ages 16-23. Although more of a side hobby now, I still have a passion for writing poetry and can’t wait to share that with students!
After our first class, students will be asked to return next week with at least one original limerick. More are always encouraged!
1 file available upon enrollment· A notebook and pencil for notes during class, and a limerick (or a few) later! There will also be a handout available to download which outlines some tips for writing limericks to help through the writing process, as well as an “empty” Rhyming Tree for your learner to practice & brainstorm with on their own.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Because this is such a short class, there is no formal assessment. Our second class will determine what students took away from our first meeting.
30 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
We will be reflecting on and talking about how certain poems make us feel, but the limericks we read in class have been specifically curated by me. I've ensured all content is age- and developmentally-appropriate.
