Beginner - Advanced Level
In this 6-week course, students will write and create their own storybooks. They will brainstorm ideas, shares ideas, write the story, and even add pictures, if they want. Each week, we will practice skills such as writing legibly and in complete sentences, using the correct capitalization and punctuation, flow of a story (beginning, middle, and end) and outlining a story. We will touch on parts of speech like nouns, pronouns, verbs, conjunctions, prepositions, and adjectives. Each class will start with a short writing activity, prompt, or game. What will we be doing each week? Week 1: Introductions, brainstorm ideas, flow of a story, outline story Introduction - 5 min - Write 3 complete sentences about yourself. Brainstorm story ideas - 10 min - Come up with one story prompt Flow of a story - 10 min Outline story - 5 min Week 2: Work on beginning of the story Writing Game - 5 min Parts of Speech Intro - 10 min - Nouns and Verbs Beginning of story - 15 min - Introduce characters and what is happening in the story Week 3: Work on the middle of story Writing Game - 5 min Parts of Speech - 10 min - Pronouns and Adjectives Middle of Story - 15 min - Building up to the climax of a story Week 4: Work on middle of the story Writing Game - 5 min Parts of Speech - 10 min - Prepositions and Conjunctions Middle of Story - 15 min - Writing the climax of the story Week 5: Work on ending of the story Writing Game - 5 min Parts of Speech - 10 min - Adverbs and Interjections End of Story - 15 min - Conclusion and wrapping up the story Week 6: Assemble book, final touches and sharing their story Writing Game - 5 min Parts of Speech - 5 min - Review Finishing the Story - 5 min - Finalize the story Presentation - 15 min - Read and share the story Students are encouraged to write outside of class. This can be something as simple as writing a few sentences about what they are wearing that day or what they ate. All levels within the second grade are welcome. Please let me know if there is something specific I can focus on with your child. I keep the class small so I can work with each student individually as well as in a group.
