Class Experience

In this on going class, students will learn the meaning of AI (artificial intelligence), how it is used, why we use it, and what careers use AI. Students will be asked to come up with ideas for a new AI-generated coloring page that they will color in the next class. On some weeks, students will be given prompts or themes by the teacher so students can begin to "think outside the box" and get creative on their new coloring page ideas. These prompts may include language arts skills like nouns, prepositions, adjectives, verbs and more. Students will work as a team and combine their thoughts together to form a unique AI coloring page that we will color during the next class. For example, students may come up with "a panda in space eating popcorn", or "three dogs eating a banana under a bridge ". The teacher will take the students ideas and use AI apps outside of class time to make a new coloring page. Students will not use any AI apps during class. Throughout class time, students can color the coloring page that was created during the previous class.

The theme for the first class will be chosen by the teacher. Students will discuss the theme for the next AI coloring page that will be used in the second class. The themes made in one class will become the AI coloring page for the next class, and so on. This is an on-going class so you can join anytime, however I HIGHLY RECCOMEND having your student stay enrolled for a minimum of 2 weeks, so they can think of ideas for an AI coloring page one week, and then see/color the page the next week.

We will sometimes play AI games during class. Examples are "Can You Spot AI?", "Reverse AI", "Replicate AI", and various other online games through Google Labs (these games are all age appropriate and will be handled/controlled by the teacher throughout the class). The only additional supplies needed for game days are a blank sheet of paper and a pencil.

As an added language bonus, we will learn a new "Tech Term of the Week". These are typically Greek or Latin root words that relate to STEM/STEAM ideas. Learning the root word will help students begin to understand technology concepts. For example, students may not know what "astronomy" means, but when they learn the root word of "astro", they will understand that astronomy has something to do with stars.

*** Please note, this is not a drawing class. This is a coloring club for students to conceptualize an idea, then color an AI generated coloring page during class. Students will have time at the end of class to share their coloring page with everyone.

SCHEDULING NOTE: I have 2 children that attend public elementary school, therefore I schedule my classes around their school holidays, breaks, and mandatory digital days. This explains why I have several random days throughout the year that I'm unable to teach. If your class is interrupted by my scheduling, I will be more than happy to transfer your child into another day/time for the same week so they don't miss out on any AI fun!

December 2024: AI coloring page theme TBD by student input from previous class each week
---> no class the weeks of December 22-28 and December 29, 2024-January 4, 2025

All future themes TBD by class interest and teacher approval and will be updated on this listing and in the classroom posts. We strongly urge your child to stay enrolled for a minimum of 2 weeks, so they can create their unique AI coloring page the first week, and be able to see and color that new creation the second week.
Learning Goals
Students will unleash their most imaginative thoughts to create a unique AI generated coloring page that we will then color during class. Students will practice language arts skills during their brainstorming time. Lastly, students will engage in social skills by talking about and sharing their coloring page with the other students. During coloring time, the teacher will guide them in casual conversation about their interests, daily lives, and student-led topics of interest.

Shiny Happy Kids teachers have been working with students ages 3-18 in a variety of settings, from art schools and STEAM labs to libraries, summer camps, forest school, and even RPG game tables. One thing we all have in common is a dedication to creating safe, positive, inclusive spaces and experiences where kids can connect, experiment, be challenged, share their passions, and just be their wonderful selves. We want you to SHINE!

From Miss Ashley: I have always loved to work with young children! Ever since I was a kid, I was very creative in coming up with unique ways of expressing myself. That uniqueness carried over into my adult life, and that is what brings me here today! I love being a part of a child’s yearn to learn and I believe that learning is always fun. I’m a mom to two amazing kiddos, both currently in elementary school. Before having my kids, I had 7 years experience in working with children primary-aged through elementary school. I was an assistant Pre-K teacher followed by working at various summer camps through my local Parks & Recreation department. I’ve worn many hats throughout life but my favorite one is being a mom. I love my wonderful husband, my amazing kiddos, my 3 crazy cats, sewing and gardening.
