US Grade 3 - 6
Learners who are already comfortable creating original cat characters and clan are ready to tackle plotting and narrative, whether for a short story, a novel, or for scripted roleplay. With guidance and direction, any writer can create a strong story that is engaging for readers. Let's tackle that adventure together! In this class, we will discuss the traditional linear narrative arc, "A" and "B" plots, lone protagonists versus ensembles, and how to craft scenes that build towards an interesting climax. We will also cover types of conflict in literature and how to use the different kinds of conflict in a story to provide tension and help further the plot. Short prompts aid writers in identifying the central conflict of their stories, deciding which character will serve as the protagonist, and how they will guide their character through the introduction, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution of their story. We will also touch on what makes a great antagonist. Once your plot is complete, you are ready to use your outline to write your original Warriors story! We will not writer a story during class time. Writers will instead be prepared to start a story on their own after class is complete.
Learning Goals
Learners will learn the components of a short story and be prepared to write a story on their own.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
I often jokingly refer to the Warriors series as "Game of Thrones for children," but it's not entirely off the mark. The Warriors books contain violence and character death, as well as romantic themes. Original character backstories may also contain elements such as character death, forbidden relationships, child abandonment or adoption, spiritual and cultural beliefs as depicted within the series, and diverse representation of marginalized groups.
Language of Instruction
English
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
