Homework
1-2 hours per week. Students will be expected to prepare a short speech for each class meeting.
Assessment
Students will be assessed using a rubric to include evaluation of student preparation and practice, speaking volume and speed, eye contact and gestures, use of note cards. Feedback will be given to each student through private message and will focus on skills to continue working on as well as highlights and strengths.

Class Experience

US Grade 5 - 7
This camps meets 1x a week for 6 weeks. Students will learn how to prepare and give six types of speeches using activities to build students’ confidence and poise when speaking in front of a group. They will adapt the speech focus and style to the assigned situation and purpose. They will practice speaking to express thoughts and feelings effectively. Students will also learn active listening and questioning skills in an "audience follow up" time after each speaker. Speech skills taught and practiced will include speaking rate and volume, eye contact, body gestures, and speaking from note cards. Classes will include direct instruction, games, and speech presentations. Speech development will require preparation and practice with a goal of each speech presentation to be 3-5 minutes in length..
Each lesson will include instruction on speaking skills and type of speech for the week as well as activities and games to help with the weekly focus. Students will present speeches during each lesson as well.

Week 1 – Introductory speech
Week 2– Book review presentation
Week 3 – Informative speech
Week 4 – Demonstrative speech
Week 5 – Persuasive speech 
Week 6 – Motivational speech
Learning Goals
This class supports Common Core State Standards: CCSS.ELA – Literacy SL.3.1 – 7.1, 3.2 – 7.2, 3.3 – 7.3, 3.4 – 7.4, 3.5 – 7.5, 3.6 – 7.6.
Students will:
1.	Plan and practice presenting a 3-5 minute long speech
2.	Adapt speaking to assigned situation and purpose 
3.	Learn to speak audibly and express thoughts, feeling, and ideas clearly
4.	Learn eight different speaking styles
5.	Practice attentive and active listening
6.	Ask and answer questions to gain understanding
