Class Experience

This is a fun class where your children will get an introduction to the basic skills needed to produce the shapes used to communicate with American Sign Language (ASL).

In this class they will learn:
1. The proper way to express feelings and questions through facial expressions, handshapes and
     gestures,
2. The signs for numbers one through twenty-five,
3. Some general knowledge about the deaf culture, and
4. Expand their ASL vocabulary by at least 90 words!!

This class is structured around student participation, so your teen will not be bored! They will be required to mimic the hand shapes, movements and placements of the teacher. They will also be expected to mimic the facial expressions to clearly produce the 'feeling' of the statement being made.

Time allowing, there will be four 'quiz-games', that will get your teens excited to show off what they have learned!!

It is strongly suggested that the students take the 'You Can Use ASL - Pre-Course (Ages 12-15)' so that they can feel comfortable with fingerspelling.

Homework will be assigned to students, so they will need about an hour outside of class to accomplish this.

At the end of the class, students should continue their learning with 'You Can Use ASL Too (Ages 12-15)'

Teacher expertise and credentials
My passion is learning. I've always loved it! The growth that comes from it, the wisdom that follows. The avenues that are opened because of it, the way one feels when discussing a matter, while fully understanding the topic. But most of all, the possibility of seeing someone light up because of the understanding of something new. I tell every one of my current students that they should never put a limit on their capacity to learn. If anyone tells them that they need to get ‘good grades’, I tell them that they shouldn't accept ‘good’, that they should always strive for ‘great’, ‘better’, and on the rare occasion, even “perfect”. We should always see the infinite possibility of growth and intelligence for our, children, family members, friends and even for ourselves.
I've worked over 20 years in an office setting. While I soaked up everything from outsourced customer service to State tax accounting, I made certain that I took the time and opportunities afforded me to hone-in my computer and word processing skills to create easy-to-use databases, spreadsheets, power point presentations, business cards, new employee manuals and employer newsletters. I've worked my way from the 'lowly' entry level position to excel in account management and training positions.
A year ago, I decided to change my career. Although, my job was satisfying, I wanted more! I wanted to be utterly and completely happy - I wanted to focus all of my attention to teaching. It's now my favorite way of life. I am an educator. Choosing to dedicate my life to teaching people, one-on-one, has given me the glorious, God-given privilege of seeing people blossom and grow. I am able to accomplish this through sincere personal interest, patience and persistence. It's an amazing experience - no, it's the epitome of happiness.
As humans, we never stop learning. We should always seek different avenues that open up more opportunities. For instance, I speak fluent Spanish, American Sign Language and have a working knowledge of French. Currently, I’m learning Italian. What’s next? Who knows? But it’s going to be great!

Topics I'd like to share with my students:
1. Foreign Languages: Because I'm fluent in Spanish and ASL, I would love to share some language classes with those who just want to be friendly and those who want to become proficient. Languages come in so many colors, there's no need to just use one crayon!
2. Computer Skills: Through hard work and dedication I have been able to widen my professional resume and now I want to help young ones become proficient in their computer skills to allow them the opportunity to follow their professional dreams without hindrance! Some classes I'll offer will be Excel, Word, PowerPoint etc.
3. The Arts:
3a. Dance: I love to dance, so if Outschool will allow it, I'd love to offer Salsa, Meregue and Bachata classes to the more adventurous students! (YAY!!)
3b. Some of my hobbies are drawing, painting, crocheting, knitting and modeling. I'd love to share some tips with your little ones!

I hope to e-meet you one day!
