Class Experience

In this class, the participants are the teachers! They are also the learners of one another's lessons. I, the official instructor, am here to guide and model the teaching process along the way, as well as to play the role of another learner for each of their lessons.

Please note that this is a flex class, meaning it has no live meetings. While learners have flexibility in when they complete the work each week, it is very helpful in this class for learners to complete it sometime during the correct week as this particular course is very dependent on learner-to-learner interaction and responses.

Each learner will be able to present three lessons total (on weeks 1, 2, and 3). Learners are welcome to teach each week on the subject that they choose. They may pick a different subject each week or stick with the same one and teach something new about it each time.

Ideas I give are: Tell us about an animal that interests you. Teach us how to write a letter of the alphabet correctly. Show us how to do a science experiment. Teach us how to sing a simple song. Instruct us how to do a certain dance move. Read us a short picture book you wrote yourself. Model how to create a snake with playdough. The possibilities are endless!

Your teaching has three parts:
1 - Prepare and present your lesson to us in a short video--Use the time you feel comfortable with, probably 2-5 minutes long. (These can be recorded through the integrated Zoom function in the Outschool classroom page.)
2 - Assign us a task. (This could be to try to sing your song back to you via video or to complete a worksheet you have written out, scanned in, and attached to a classroom comment for us).
3 - Give us feedback on the assignments we "submit to you" through the classroom. (Tell us something we did great and maybe something we could improve.)

This is our course plan:
Week 1 - Watch the instructor's guide to the class video and sample lesson. Share your own Lesson 1 and assign your Task 1.
Week 2 - Watch the instructor's guide to giving feedback on assignments. Do your best to complete one or more of your classmate's "assigned tasks" from Week 1 and "submit it" through our Outschool classroom. Share your own Lesson 2 and assign your Task 2.
Week 3 - Watch the instructor's helpful teaching tips video - Complete one or more of your classmate's "assigned tasks" from Week 2 and "submit it" through our Outschool classroom. Give feedback on your classmates' submissions of your assignments. Share your own Lesson 3 and assign your Task 3.
Week 4 - Watch the instructor's final video. Complete one or more of your classmate's "assigned tasks" from Week 3 and "submit it" through our Outschool classroom. Give feedback on your classmates' submissions of your assignments.

Please note that you can take this course as many times as you like since the unique learners enrolled and the lessons they design keep the content changing.

NOTE: Sections that include the following weeks will span five weeks although this is a four-week course because these weeks we have a break with no new assignments, though you are welcome to use these off-weeks as catch-up time:
- Week of September 13
- Week of November 19
- Week of December 20

I have officially taught for over five year, a combination of Spanish and English classes to a variety of ages. When I was a kid, I dreamed of teaching and loved opportunities to play that role. As a teen and college student, I created or ceased opportunities to lead classes whenever I could. Now, my own child relished teaching as well, and I frequently play the role of learner in the classes he presents to me.
