During this course, students will read "The Son of Neptune," the second book in Rick Riordan's The Heroes of Olympus series (students will need their own copy of the book). Students can read the book for the first time or re-read it along with the class. This book focuses on the intersection of Greek and Roman mythology. Throughout the course of the class, students will learn about various Greek and Roman gods and goddesses and the basics of these mythologies. Each week, students read the assigned chapters before the class and then work together to summarize the chapters. Students also participate in discussions in which they analyze character motivations and decisions for about 25 minutes. During the second half of the class, students will create a character similar to the ones that they have read about, but not the actual characters. They will then use to role-play the events that they just read about, seeing if they choose to make the same decisions that the characters make. This kind of learning not only engages students in the reading, but also teaches them to make connections and analyze character motivation and plot more deeply. Students will be assigned the chapters that they will summarize ahead of time each week, and these will also be posted in the Outschool classroom. Nothing has to be written down; they just have to be ready to discuss the main events of the chapter(s) they read. Each week, one student will be assigned as the "General Summarizer," who will determine the biggest ideas from all the chapters that were read. Additionally, discussion questions for the assigned chapters will be assigned each week and posted in the Outschool classroom. The chapters will be broken up as follows: Week 1: Introduction (no reading required) Week 2: Chapters 1-8 Week 3: Chapters 9-16 Week 4: Chapters 17-24 Week 5: Chapter 25-32 Week 6: Chapters 33-40 Week 7: Chapters 41-46 Week 8: Chapters 47-52 The instructor ensures that all students have a chance to talk and participate. It is preferred that cameras are on because it helps to develop community and collaboration, but after the initial check-in, cameras will not be required.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi there! I earned my elementary teaching license in 2004 and taught mainly 3rd and 4th grades for several years. I currently work as the Director of Innovation & Professional Learning in Hampton, City Schools, Virginia, where my favorite thing to do is teach teachers how to come up with new and exciting strategies for teaching young people. I practice what I preach and regularly teach students of all levels in order to try out new teaching methods.
I like to teach classes that are high in engagement. My favorite subjects areas are elementary mathematics and social studies and any grade level for writing.
I live at home with my own kids, ages 4 and 11. The 4 year old has Pippy Longstocking-style strength and the 11-year old is obsessed with Minecraft, Dr. Who, and giving me his feedback on lessons I design and whether he thinks other kids will like them.
