Yoshi Vs. Bowser: A Mario Party Escape Room of Puzzles and Trivia
Class experience
In this one-time class inspired by the Mario Party video games, Yoshi and Bowser are competing in a virtual board game. Students will play as Yoshi, I will be Bowser (although plenty of other Mario characters appear as well), and the players will take turns rolling dice and moving around an original game board I have created with a mix of PowerPoint and other design programs. As players move around the board, they will earn coins, find items, interact with various characters, and purchase...
While this class offers a fun, unique virtual board game experience, the puzzles and challenges are designed to be educational and get students thinking as well. The may involve wordplay, spelling, word definitions, visual puzzles, memory, math, logic problems, Mario trivia, and more. My hope is that this class will appeal to both Outschool users looking for a recreational activity and students looking for a fun supplement to online learning. Students will also learn: -how to work as a team--taking turns, sharing ideas, and making decisions together -how to develop strategies around universal game ideas like risk, resource management, and thinking multiple turns ahead. (Is it better to spend a few coins on a small advantage early on or save up coins to spend on a better advantage later? Is it better to roll a regular die or a special one that has higher numbers but could also roll a zero?) -how to work efficiently within a limited amount of time -how to think outside the box or find creative solutions to problems
I am a teacher, playwright, and published YA author, and I've previously worked for a high school where I taught writing and ACT/SAT prep. I've also taught English to younger children overseas, led educational events and programming at various theaters around Chicago, and taught reading, language arts, and educational escape room-based courses to more than 7000 elementary and middle school students online.
No materials are needed for this class, but students who have access to devices that have the Zoom annotate tool (which are most tablets or laptops that aren't Chromebooks) may want to use those for class. Annotate is not at all required, but I find students tend to benefit from it as a way to work out problems on the screen.
Everything is very kid-friendly, and there's nothing here that wouldn't be in a regular Mario game. The students are also playing as a team and not competing against each other.
