Yosemite Valley | Birthplace of National Parks
Class experience
Home to giant redwoods, pristine rivers, and inspiring granite valleys, Yosemite National Park is one of North America's most remarkable environments. At its heart lies Yosemite Valley, a sight to be seen, and a prime example of some of the most successful conservation efforts in history. In this class we'll explore the history of conservation in Yosemite National Park. We'll follow writer and conservationist John Muir's journey to protect The Yosemite Valley, and his creative efforts to...
There are 3 primary learning objectives for this lesson. Students will: -Learn about unique flora, fauna, geology & climate of Yosemite. We'll talk about distinct features, popular sights, and less travelled recreation opportunities to highlight these features. -Be introduced to conservation history of Yosemite Valley and John Muir's influence through writing and direct emersion in nature. We'll explore some of the famed conservationists writings including excerpts from, "The Yosemite, 1912." -Develop the foundations for their own environmental ethic. While environmental ethics are complicated and take a lifetime to form, this class introduces students to concepts that drive conservation efforts, and our relationship to the natural environment.
I have a Bachelors in Environmental Science & Policy from Florida State University, as well as a Certificate in Planning with a focus in Land Use Planning. This course leans into the environmental history and policy related to conservation efforts and land use in North America. I have studied environmental ethics and conservation policy in North America extensively and have read much of John Muir's writing. In addition to this formal training, I have first hand experience, backpacking in the Yosemite Valley & Wilderness. It is one of the most diverse and interesting landscapes I've ever been in. Having experienced it's magic first hand, I hope to share some of its beauty and rich history with students through this course.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
