Class Experience

Class will begin with an opportunity for each student to show-and-tell about their specific doll. Students can introduce themselves and their dolls and share a description of their doll. Class will begin with yoga breathwork and a warm-up for the neck and shoulders. Students will be instructed on how to position their dolls into yoga poses and then we will do the pose alongside the doll. For some yoga poses, we will hold the dolls as we do the pose. Class ends with relaxation time and live flute music.

Learning Goals

Students practice their public speaking skills at the beginning of class while introducing themselves and their dolls. Students practice listening skills and following directions as they process verbal directions and visual cues to move into yoga poses. Students learn breathing techniques for calming such as Balloon Breath (also called belly breathing or diaphragmatic breathing). Students learn yoga poses and their benefits such as Plank pose and how it strengthens their arms, shoulders, and abdominal muscles. Students model the yoga poses with their dolls, thus gaining a more in-depth understanding of how to do the pose themselves, while engaging in the valuable element of play-directed learning. Imagining scenarios such as riding in a boat (boat pose) with their doll encourages pretend play and creative thinking. Lastly, children learn relaxation skills as they are led through a progression of supine poses and into corpse pose. Relaxation is a learned skill that benefits a child throughout their lifetime.

Parental Guidance
Please make sure your child has a yoga space that is clear and free of obstacles and that there is no furniture with sharp corners nearby or other tripping hazards. It is best to do yoga on a padded, non-skid, surface such as a yoga mat. It is recommended that children do yoga in comfortable, stretchy clothing, with bare feet, to avoid slipping. Students may want to have a water bottle with a non-spill lid for a water break during class. We recognize that children are occasionally hurt while engaged in play as well as during activities of this type. We therefore assume all risks applicable to our child’s participation in this activity. We hereby waive any and all claims against Heidi Brown and Outschool. We have read and agreed to the policies of participation and understand everything we have read in this policy.
Supply List
Please have a clear, safe space prepared for doing yoga with no obstacles in the way or sharp corners nearby. Also, have a water bottle handy, preferably with a no-spill top. We will take a water break during class. It is also nice to have a small blanket to cover up your doll with at the end of class. Participants should wear comfortable, stretchy clothing like yoga pants, leggings, or other stretchy pants, even pajama pants and some shorts (not jean fabric) are comfortable and stretchy. Avoid wearing skirts or dresses to class.
