Come breathe and flow with me in this weekly ongoing yoga class! In this introduction to yoga, we will explore a wide range of asanas that will benefit the mind, body and open the heart. Attention will be given to the correct forms of each pose so as to prevent injury and maintain healthy joints. My flows reflect both Hatha and Vinyassa yoga. Through relatable imagery, I will guide the student into poses that offer proper alignment, twists, hip openers and backbends, just to name a few. We will also explore varying breathing techniques and learn how to use our breath in relation to our flow. Some light meditation will also be introduced to promote a peace within. We will always start with a thorough warm up in order to prepare the muscles for strength conditioning. The warm up and cool down will directly correlate to the poses being taught, so as to prevent injury. Correct form will always be enforced. After the warm up, a typical class could involve Sun Salutations, standing and seated asanas. Varying flows will be taught each week giving focus to specific muscle groups and/or proper alignment of the spine. All levels will benefit as I love to challenge my students with as much as they can handle. I also love to give variations to choose from, so that all will feel comfortable and welcome.
Learning Goals
One of the learning objectives will be to focus the mind and learn to be present in the given moment. Mental, physical and emotional awareness should build within the child as they grow in their practice. This knowledge should prove helpful to the child on and off the mat.
Differing variations of Sun Salutations will be clearly taught to give the student a versatility within their flow. A wide variety of beginner and intermediate asanas in their correct forms will be introduced/practiced each week. This will include both seated positions for flexibility and standing positions for strength and balance.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
I highly recommend having water accessible to your child during practice, although it is recommended in yoga to hydrate mostly beforehand and afterwards, so as to allow the heat to build within the body. But as this is a virtual class, I encourage the child to drink as much as they need! If you have a yoga mat, please provide the child with one to use for class. Otherwise, they can use an open space instead.
Please be aware of potential injuries that could incur if the child doesn’t follow the given instruction correctly. That said, this class is very safe and I will carefully lead the child into each pose taught. If you feel more comfortable, feel free to join the child for class so that you are nearby to help guide as well.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Teacher expertise and credentials
Bachelor's Degree in Music or Theatre or Arts from University of Florida
I am a qualified Hatha and Vinyassa Yoga Instructor and spent 1 month doing intensive training with yogis in Thailand. There I attained my 200 hour teacher certification. In the program, I received thorough training in how to teach the correct forms of each asana, in order to protect the body from injuries (knees, spine, neck, wrists etc).
