Yes, I Have Dyslexia. Yes, I CAN Read - Part 1

This course is designed to help students with dyslexia or other reading disabilities. Students who struggle in the following areas of reading would benefit from this course:
- difficulty breaking words into smaller parts of syllables
- difficulty identifying and manipulating sounds in syllables
- difficulty remembering the names of letters and recalling their corresponding sounds
- difficulty decoding single words
- difficulty spelling words the way they sound (phonetically) or remembering letter sequences in very common words seen often in print

 In this course, we will break down the phonics and phonemic awareness skills that are necessary for reading success. Some of the things that students will work on are:
- rhyming words
- blending phonemes (sounds) to make words
- syllable recognition and manipulation
- letter identification
- alphabet knowledge (order of the alphabet)
- letter sounds (how to correctly produce each sound as well as how to recognize each sound in print)
- high frequency words
- word formation and handwriting
- closed syllable types
- consonant sounds
- short vowel sounds

This specific course and it's follow up "Yes I have dyslexia, yes I CAN read - part 2" are designed for students in kindergarten to first grade.

This class is one that requires students to print off a manual so they can follow along and work on their handwriting. Students will participate in activities that require them to write as well as activities that are oral. Many of these activities are done through listening and speaking games. 

I am a special education teacher and have been trained in working specifically with students with dyslexia. This course is designed to move at the pace of it's learners. We constantly practice skills so that they become second nature to students and so that students feel successful! Reading is hard. Dyslexia and other disabilities can make it even harder. My goal is to provide your child with the skills they need to become successful readers!
