Class Experience
This course is designed to meet the requirements of the Year 3 English National Curriculum for 7-8 year-olds for the following areas of learning: Spoken Language Word Reading Comprehension Spelling Composition Vocabulary, Grammar & Punctuation Students will study a variety of fiction, non-fiction and poetry texts over the year. We will focus on understanding the vocabulary within the text, making connections to the children's own experiences, and practising reading comprehension...
In reading study, students will: Develop positive attitudes to reading. Read independently, with understanding. Develop their skills of inference, prediction, explanation, retrieval, sequencing and summarizing. In writing study, students will: Plan and draft their writing. Compose and rehearse sentences orally. Organise paragraphs around a theme. Create settings, characters and plot. Evaluate their own and others' writing, suggesting improvements. Proofread for spelling and punctuation errors. Read their own writing aloud, with expression, making the meaning clear. In vocabulary, grammar & punctuation study, students will: Extend sentences by using a wider range of conjunctions. Use present and past tense. Choose nouns and pronouns appropriately. Use prepositions, adverbs and fronted adverbials. Use commas in lists, and after fronted adverbials. Use the possessive apostrophe with singular and plural nouns. Use and punctuate direct speech. In spelling study, students will: Use prefixes and suffixes. Spell words that are often misspelt. Write sentences dictated to them, that include words and punctuation taught so far. Where any gaps in learning are identified, Year 2 objectives will be revisited.
I am an English Specialist with 37 years' teaching experience.
Homework will assigned weekly, in consultation with parents. It will involve reading, learning spellings, and completing writing tasks started in class.
Writing materials. Text book: The Hundred-Mile-an-Hour-Dog by Jeremy Strong 3-4 other reading books will be required over the year. All other resources will be provided weekly by the teacher.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Ongoing assessment, communicated to parents through messaging.
40 minutes per class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
