In this THREE week (FOUR times a week) Spanish 2 Semester 1 immersion class, students will learn new vocabulary by reading Two comprehensible novels: Noches Misteriosas and Frida Kahlo. Noches Misteriosas de Granada Book Description- Kevin used to have a perfect life. Now, dumped by his popular girlfriend, Kevin leaves for a summer in Spain with his best friend, and his life seems anything but perfect. Taking classes he can’t understand, living with a very odd host-family, trying to get the attention of a girl with whom he has no chance, and dealing with a guy who has a dark side and who seems to be out to get him, Kevin escapes into a book and enters a world of long-ago adventures. As the boundaries between his two worlds begin to blur, Kevin discovers that nothing is as it appears…especially at night! The low unique word count and high frequency factor (the number of times core structures are embedded in the text) in the Comprehension-based™ reader, ‘Noches misteriosas en Granada’, make this an ideal read for advanced beginning Spanish students. Each page is loaded with cognates (words that are similar in English and Spanish), recycled vocabulary, and illustrations, which makes this read highly comprehensible. Frida Kahlo Book Description Frida Kahlo (1907-1954) is one of Mexico’s greatest artists, a remarkable achievement for someone who spent most of her relatively short life racked with pain. Frida expressed her pain through her art, producing some 143 paintings, 55 of which were self-portraits. To this day, she remains an icon of strength, courage, and audacity. This brief biography provides a glimpse into her turbulent life and her symbolic art. Students meet for 45 minutes a week to interact and play traditional games and activities to reinforce class content. This is a 90% immersion class. I will give instructions and explanations in English, for the benefit of your child. However, most of the class will be in Spanish. Students will be able to read, write, speak, and listen in Spanish at the novice high level after completing this course. I use Google Slides to teach this unit. Students should have some previous knowledge of Spanish to join this class (one year of Spanish is recommended). Some fun traditional games that we will play are Tic-Tac-Toe, Connect 4, Sorry, Snakes and Ladders and Pictionary. The focus will be on developing skills in the areas of listening, speaking and reading. The focus will be on developing skills in the areas of listening, speaking and reading.
