In Year 1 everything starts to become a little more formal, as the freedom and play of Reception are replaced with more organised activities. Here are the topics your child will learn in their more structured English lessons. Literacy is a daily lesson, made up of three aspects: Reading Writing Speaking and listening Reading in Year 1 – your child will: be able to use their phonic knowledge to read words know all the 40+ phonemes (sounds) and know which letters or groups of letters correspond to them read words with -s, -es, -ing, -ed, -er and -est endings read a range of poems, stories and non-fiction be able to re-tell stories that they know correct their own inaccurate reading
Learning Goals
Writing in Year 1 – your child will learn:
learn to spell words containing each of the 40+ phonemes already taught (read our parents' guide to Year 1 spelling for a more detailed explanation)
learn to write the days of the week
learn to add suffixes, word endings (such as -s, -es, -ing, -ed, -er and -est) and also learn about the prefix un-
form all lower case and upper case letters, plus the digits 0 to 9 join clauses in a sentence using the word 'and'
punctuate sentences using capitals, full stops, question marks and exclamation marks, sequence stories to form short narratives
discuss what they have written with others.
Week 1: WALT: Assessment and proceed with Phase 2 phonics "a, b sounds" and words. (depending on ability)
Week 2 : WALT: Phases 2 phonics "c, i, a" sounds and words. Every class will will go thought SITPINS phonics sounds
(depending on ability)
Week 3: WALT: Phases 2 phonics "t, p sounds and words. Every class will will go thought SITPINS phonics sounds
(depending on ability)
August 14 Week 5: WALT Phase 2 phonics " x, y ,u,q" sounds and words with these sounds.
Continues...… Phases 2 & 3 phonics reading short stories with the phonics sounds. Phonics plays.

I am a graduate from the University of Greenwich in London with BSc and QTS currently taking my Masters in Education Science at Khon Kaen University.
I have over 20 years’ experience teaching students of all ages. With 15 years working in London School. Also 4 years working in Bangkok. Where I always had good overall grades, progression for students in my care.
I have also worked in high achieving academics schools, EAL, post-1, Special Needs Schools and excellent International Schools.
This experience teaching in a Co-Educational Schools has been rewarding for me and for prospective young scientists. My experience working both in London and Aboard at has given me the opportunity to teach in the most diverse, challenging and enjoyable educational environments. “Christ the King Sixth Form College” was the largest institution in the United Kingdom for A level Science and I had sole responsibly of teaching Biology AS Level.
My time at a Secondary school has enabled me to teach all three Sciences at Double/Coordinated level and I have over a year’s experience teaching IGCSE Chemistry, Biology and Physics. I have been able to make outstanding resources that are enjoyable for young students.
