In 1579, an African-born man would be the first of his kind to step foot on the soil of mainland Japan and make history. We will learn how he caught the attention of Lord Nobunaga, the head of the most powerful clan in Japan, who made Yasuke a samurai in his court. 1. Students will learn about the life of the first and only African Samurai of Japan.
I have experience teaching sensitive topics and subject matters in community settings to various age groups. I will teach this class from an educational, cultural and historical view point.
Construction paper pre-cut into a medium size square shape and a glue stick.
30 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
There will be a description of persons based on skin color. The reason was that the Japanese people had never seen a man with dark skin before in feudal Japan. There is no negative connotation in the discription.
I will refer to the following books: African Samurai: The True Story of Yasuke, a Legendary Black Warrior in Feudal Japan by Thomas Lockley and Geoffrey Girard and Yasuke The Legend of the African Samurai, by Jamal Turner, to prepare for this lesson.
