Book Club: The Best of Young Adult Historical Fiction

YA Thrillers & Chillers Book Club With NYT Bestselling Author Ginny Myers Sain

Class
Students will read and discuss a different young adult thriller each month to dissect what makes these stories so popular, how mysteries and thrillers are constructed, and what goes into telling a goosebump-inducing story.

Class experience

US Grade 8 - 11
This class is taught in English.
Students will deepen their understanding of the mystery/thriller genre, the elements of story, story construction, literary analysis, and literary devices while enjoying the benefits of reading for pleasure and gaining experience participating in group discussions. 
Ginny Myers Sain is the New York Times best-selling author of DARK AND SHALLOW LIES, SECRETS SO DEEP, and ONE LAST BREATH, all published by Penguin Random House/Penguin Teen. She also has more 20 years of experience teaching and directing young theatre artists and writers. 
Homework Offered
Students will have assigned reading for each week totaling approximately 100 pages of a contemporary young adult novel.
2 - 4 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
Informal assessment based on group discussion.
Grades Offered
Each Learner will need a copy of the following novels:
Weeks 1-4: I KILLED ZOE SPANOS by Kit Frick
Weeks 5-8: ALL YOUR TIWSTED SECRETS by Dianah Urban
Weeks 9-12: SECRETS SO DEEP by Ginny Myers Sain
These young adult books are suggested by their publishers for ages 13 and up. Some may contain scary/violent situations, adult language, adult situations, portrayal of drug and alcohol use, etc. 
Readers will need to have their own copies of the listed novels. These are available at most bookstores, online bookstores, and public libraries.
