Class Experience

The class will focus on the basics of criminal law, starting with the question of "Who is involved in a criminal case?" Students will learn about the participants in a criminal case: defendants, victims, prosecutors, defense attorneys, police officers, judges, bailiffs, court clerks, and probation officers. Using the Harry Potter novels, students will explore the roles of each participant in the criminal justice system.

During the class, students will follow along with a Google slide presentation to learn about the criminal justice system, followed by a series of discussions and evaluations of textual examples from the Harry Potter novels. The first half of the class will focus on lecture and discussion, and the second half of the class will give students the opportunity to role play different participants in a criminal case.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Welcome! I'm very excited to be your teacher! I live in Idaho in the United States. I enjoy reading and writing young adult novels, traveling around the world with my family, and kayaking on the Snake River.

I have a Juris Doctor from the S.J. Quinney College of Law, University of Utah; a Master of Arts in Education from the University of Phoenix; and a Bachelor of Arts in English from Brigham Young University. I taught high school English for eight years, and I currently teach ESL online. I am also a former prosecutor and defense attorney, and I currently do appellate work in criminal law.

I plan on teaching classes about the criminal justice system and current legal topics. I also plan on teaching classes about reading and writing, both for young students and teens.

I look forward to seeing you in my classroom!
