Students will explore the evolution of the SBD Dauntless Dive Bomber and the unique design characteristics that made it successful. We will look at examples of the aircraft’s performance in battle. We will discuss the role it played in the Coral Sea, the Battle of Midway, Guadalcanal, and other important Pacific battles. We will discuss how an airplane deemed as obsolete at the beginning of the war was so successful in battle. Finally, we will discuss, with examples, the courage and skill of the pilots who flew them.

Gain a greater understanding of the attributes that made the Dauntless such an effective weapon against a formidable enemy.
Gain a greater understanding of the impact the Dauntless had in the Pacific theater of WWII.Other Details

Working with the highly mobile radar of a forward air control post I traveled the world in C-130s and C-141s, was buzzed by A-10s, and became proficient with various weaponry.
