Learn how to interpret political cartoons from the era of the Second World War. Find out the historical context, subtle meaning, and impact of these cartoons during the time they were produced. Students will be presented with a different political cartoon each from the U.S., Great Britain and others countries. Then layer-by-layer the students, guided by the teacher will investigate the historical context from which it was made. As a teacher of honor level historical studies (GCSE/AP/IB/A-Level) for the past thirty years I have used historical cartoons extensively in my instruction. Many examination boards (OCR/AQU/Edexcel) use political cartoons on their examinations and students are expected to understand these as historical sources which demonstrate a general view about an incident or an event. This is a key historical studies skill which I have always enjoyed teaching.
