US Grade 4 - 7
In this flexible (yet structured) experience, learners will write their own unique autobiographies! I'll use video mini-lessons to teach the elements of nonfiction narrative writing. I'll post written prompts, questions, and cues to help guide learners as they outline, write, and finally edit their autobiographies. I'll provide written feedback at each stage of the process. If multiple learners are enrolled in this class, they'll have opportunities to provide feedback and responses to each other. (Note #1: Learners should not include any personal information in their autobiographies, such as home city, last names, specific birthdays, social media profile info, etc.) Starting dates will be individualized depending on when your particular flex course starts, but below is an overview of the structure of our coursework: WEEK 1 OVERVIEW: TOPICS: What is an autobiography? What is narrative nonfiction? Learners will learn about the autobiography genre and narrative nonfiction, and they'll consider the autobiographies (or biographies) that they've read or seen previously. Week 2 OVERVIEW: TOPIC: How do I structure my autobiography? Learners will complete their outlines based on suggestions for structures. WEEK 3 OVERVIEW: TOPIC: Writing the draft! Learners will spend this week writing the draft of their autobiographies. By the end of the week, they should submit their drafts for feedback. WEEK 4 OVERVIEW: TOPICS: Revising, Editing & Polishing Your Autobiography! Learners will work on creating a polished final product, using an editing checklist to complete their autobiographies!
