Description
Class Experience
In this writing workshop, students will learn: where to look for ideas, the purposes of writing, and how to use strong descriptive words, transitions, imagery, onomatopoeias, and dialogue in their writing.
A writing assignment will be given for each class. Assignments will be uploaded for the teacher. Students may share pieces of their writing at the beginning of the next class. Length of story will be an individual choice, so writing time may vary from student to student. Week 1: Students will look for ideas to add to their notebooks. Week 2: Students will write 2 short pieces with different purposes. Week 3: Students will create a new work using strong descriptive words. Week 4: Students will write a story using transitions. Week 5: Students will create a story using imagery. Week 6: Students will write a story using onomatopoeias, sound words. Week 7: Students will use dialogue in their writing. They can write a new piece or choose an existing work they've created in this class to prepare to share with the class. Week 8: Dear writers, keep writing!
Notebook (Spiral or Composition Book) Pencil Magazines or Newspapers (optional)
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
This course will be assessed informally. We will focus on self-assessment to determine where improvements may be made.
25 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
We will read brief excerpts from several childrens' books, such as "Frog and Toad are Friends" by Arnold Lobel, "Little Critter" by Mercer Mayer, "Ralph S. Mouse" by Beverly Cleary, and "The Magic Treehouse" by Mary Pope Osborne. Students may look at books on their own to see how authors used the crafts we learn about to improve their writing.
