6 in-class hoursHomework
1-2 hours per week. Learners will be assigned writing to do outside of class, where they will answer a couple of questions (3-5) regarding the story they are creating.Class Experience
This class will cover information found in the Warriors series by Erin Hunter, used as inspiration when structuring a written story. During the first day, learners will discuss the writing style within Erin Hunter's Warriors series and what main components make up the story. The basic components for writing will briefly be covered, with attention paid on how to start creating characters. Learners will also participate in a short brainstorming activity meant to stimulate creativity, where they will create character which could logically fit into the pre-existing Warriors world. Day two we will discuss character building, looking at it through the lens of how Warriors structures its characters. Learners will be taught what an archtype is and will then spend more time writing creatively, working on creating a background and life for the character they created the previous day, including a personality. Learners will participate in a creative quick-write, where they will develop a background short story for their character. Day three will cover world building. Learners will create their own unique "Clan" and the territory they occupy, including how their character from the previous day will fit into the world (e.g. are they a warrior, deputy, etc.). This will include another quick-write, where learners will write about one day in their character's life. Day four will include discussions on plot and how plot influences character and world. Learners will construct a rough plot outline including a beginning, middle, and end. They will continue to work on how this plot revolves around their character and Clan. Day five will continue the discussion on plot, with special attention given to conflict and details within a plot. Learners will complete another quick-write during class where they will write one instance of conflict between their character and something else. The final day will include class discussion on the story created, improvements which could be made, and class sharing time. Learners will be able to interact with myself as well as other learners during each class period, where there will be questions and class discussions. I believe in fostering creativity in learners, where each individual's writing style and process will be supported and encouraged to grow.
Learning Goals
Learners will be able to identify the different steps which go into creating a story, as well as what they can do to create their own.
